Leafs: cautiously optimistic

Let me first say I'm delighted to see the major changes to the Leafs especially seeing the beloved Gilmour back to where he belongs. Having said that, I am a little concerned about all the hoopla. I find it kind of amusing the media is comparing his last harrah to Lanny McDonald with the Flames, how the players want to bring a Cup to cap off Gilmour's career. First of, Gilmour has already won a Cup(with Lanny no less) whereas it was McDonlad's first and last. So when the media says it's Gilmour's last chance, I think they're stretching it a bit.

I'm also more concerned the players might be riding the sentiments and emotions too much that it could be a distraction. I know the players/coaches are saying the right thing - how he's not the same as he used to be and he's only going to play between 10 to 14 min a game. Are you kidding me? I can be certain he'll play more than that especiallly in the playoffs where they'll shorten the bench to 3 lines and Gilmour will get his minutes...since it is his last year. Funny nobody even talks about Owen Nolan lately.

In closing, I definitely like the Leafs' chances a lot more than before the trades, but I just hope they don't lose their focus from the hype, expectations...that it still takes a lot of hard work to win.

While it's admirable to cheer for one's team , it never ceases to amaze me that Leaf fans can generate so much optimism for a team that is currently less than a 50/50 prospect for making it past the first round .

Talk of Stanley Cups at this juncture is indeed laughable .

How do you quantify your stats train?
This was based on the present situation which will see the leafs meet Philly in the first round . Philly at 9 to 2 is currently more highly favoured by most odds makers who have the leafs at 5 to 1 .

What is it 35 yrs without a cup ?In a league of 30 or so teams , half of which have no hope of ever winning....they deserve to be bashed until they earn their way out of it .

BTW they are now the oldest team in the league.....Lol.

Oldest Team

Detroit is actually the oldest team in the league, with the Leafs a close second.

I believe the Leafs have improved there chances for the playoffs, but here are the two main problems:

1 - Too many penalties, undisciplined hockey. They have done it all year, and the chances the penalties dissapear in the playoffs is slim.

2 - Not enough shots on goal (no pun intended!) They don't shoot the puck enough, not enough scoring opportunities. Mogilny, Sundin and Nolan have to become selfish!

If the Leafs don't win this year or next, it will be 1995 all over again, the rebuilding phase!

But I thought the officials were out to get them?

Oh yeah, I forgot about that.....the officials and the league are against the Leafs...its so unfair! LOL

The Leafs spend about 20 mins of each game shorthanded......against an improved team like Ottawa, the Leafs will be lucky to advance in the playoffs. Hopefully they can turn it around and get back on track.

I just hope that Ottawa and Toronto meet in the playoffs.

I can see it now: If Ottawa wins the Cup and Toronto gets eliminated by another team, cue the sheep.

Well, if Ottawa had met Toronto, they wouldn't have advanced... baaaaa!

Well goober you may have something there, but lets see if Ottawa can win a round or two against anyone before we give them the cup.

I would actually like to see Ottawa win the cup . It's not that I'm a huge fan of their team ( I can probably only name 6 or 7 players ) but I would love to see a "low budget " team win to prove that it can be done . Tired of Colorado and Detroit pulling the 'Yankee's act" all the time and buying the cup .

I agree with the above. I'm a Leafs fan, but if they are eliminated, I hope a Canadian team wins the cup and not a Detroit or Colorado buying one.

Oh do you now? I'm not sure what NHL Playoffs you've been watching, but I wouldn't be so keen on playing Toronto if a Senator. Your beloved Sens have yet to get past the Leafs ONCE. Before you make plans for a parade, let's see if you can get past Toronto 1x. The Sens have made a career on being one of the elite all season, only to choke every posts season. ( always to the same team I might add)
Kathleen: please re-read my post. That was my point exactly.

Train - Yankees act? You mean buying a roster? I disagree with you heavily. The NYR are guilty of doing this, but not Detroit or Colarado.. heck, neither does Dallas. These teams - esp Detroit have had the same core rosters for yrs. They all do a fantastic job on drafting, and working from the talent ( minors ) within.

These teams have only dipped into the free agent pool lightly, picking up 1-2 keys news to compliment the already working chemistry.

Thanks
Kathleen
Detroit not buying players? Hmm, let's see, the past two years:

Steve Duchesne
Luc Robitaile
Brett Hull
Mathieu Schneider
Dominik Hasek
Curtis Joseph

Like any big market team, Toronto included they add free agents.
Are you sure you watch the NHL and not the AHL????

Buying players

Kathleen, free agency or trades, in today's sports its still buying players. Let's pick a small market team, Calgary. Say Washington will trade Jagr to Calgary, for 2 future 1st round picks. Will Calgary do it? Most likely not. Why? Because Jagr commands 8 - 10 million per year, and a small market team can't pay that. Why do you think Kovalev was traded from small market Pittsburgh to Big market NYR?

Same with Rob Blake, Owen Nolan, Alexei Kovalev, Brett Hull, Curtis Joseph, Ed Belfour, Bill Guerin. Trades or Free Agency, they all went to big market teams with the money. The trade happened because the small market team could still get something instead of losing the player for nothing.

With Detroit, all of the new players that came in does not equal lightly dipping into free agency - it proves your theory wrong.

BTW, prior to 2002/03, Domi and Belfour were signed at around 10 million combined. Otherwise, the Leafs were outbid on Holik and Kasparitis but were in the game.

Goober Mcfly - What was your point?
*sighs*

My point is the following:

* I think the Senators are going to go all the way this year. And, I know that if they don't face Toronto, all the Leafs fans are going to say that they wouldn't have won the Cup if they had had to face TO. (just as you already pre-emptively stated) Therefore, the Senators must face and beat TO to get the monkey off of their back. *

Edited to add: History is just that. History. Taking the Sens history losing to the Leafs in the playoffs as an indication of what's going to happen this year is akin to me saying that since the Leafs haven't won a Stanley Cup in 36 years, they won't this year either.
