... assuming there is a season ... just guessing a potential lineup.

F - M. Sundin - O. Nolan - M. Stajan - D. Tucker (Signed for 2006)
F - N. Antropov - C. Kilger (Restricted Free Agents)
F - J. Nieuwendyk - G. Roberts - T. Domi (Unrestricted Free Agents)
F - Kyle Wellwood - A. Steen - Roman Kukumberg (Possible rookies)

D - B. McCabe - T. Kaberle - K. Klee (Signed for 2006)
D - K. Pilar - A. Berg - W. Belak (Restricted Free Agents)
D - C. Colaiacovo - Brandon Bell - Ian White (Possible rookies)

G - E. Belfour - M. Tellqvist - J-F. Racine (Signed for 2006)

Lots of Free Agents ...

I figure that Mogilny and Leetch won't be back.

I think Sundin Belfour and Nolan use up 60% of the suggested salary cap or some figure like that so it may be a whole new leaf team.....

In the new scheme of things, you need to include the salaries to see if the numbers add up.

Sundin, Nolan, Tucker, Antropov, Nieuwendyk, Roberts, Domi, McCabe, Kaberle, Klee, Belfour. Those guys alone gotta cost about $40 mil.

well there will be a 24% rollback and you must assume people like sundin will take an even more pay cut...(sundins comments recently allude to that)....there will be many free agents to fil any postion..the salaries in general will all be lower there is plenty of room to add some significant parts...lets be honest anything over a million for either domi , roberts or newie will be way to costly so if they dont take the cuts bye bye and roberts and domi are not big losses..a domi can be filled by many ie clark wilm belak will do the heavey fighting..we cant waste slary on useless players...domi and roberts now fit that bill and newie is often injured...leetch is to old and soft for me and if mogilny can play he said he wll take a significant pay cut as well ...we need a man like mo on the pp....it will be interesting siging time when hockey resumes it should be some fun putting together a team.....and i hope some players will play for a bit less due to the allure of playing in toronto...and i will take some cheap chances on people like jason allison..its time for jfj to get creative and lest see what he can do...nows the real measuring stick

As a Leaf fan I am totally PISSED at what is going on in the NHL. If we assume that the cap will be $35 million the Leafs will have to make significant changes.

Does not seem fair that we should be punished to help out teams like Nashville, Florida, Atlanta, etc. I know that some of the Canadian teams have trouble as well but IMHO if we were to drop 6-8 teams in the US, install a cap of $45 million teams like Calgary and Edmonton would still be able to compete, it would get rid of some of the lower talented players that are in the league now because there are so many teams and hockey would be better for it.

It pisses me off that I will not be able to see Nolan, Belfour, Newie, Roberts, Leetch, Sundin, Mogilny etc play together because of the cap.

I also think that the players will run Goodenow out of town. Bet the $42 million dollar cap does not look so bad now does it.

As far as what players the Leafs should sign, John Jr. should look at building a team made for the playoffs. Kaberle has a ton of skill, but he is not a playoff performer. A guy like Domi, say what you want about his lack of skill he gives 110% in the playoffs. Roberts and Newie are others that come to mind. I miss the days of Yuskevitch (sp?) and Markov on the blue line. Those two guys would block a shot with their faces if necessary to win a playoff game.

It is going to be a very interesting summer. Lots of unrestricted free agents out there as well, Kariya and Pronger are two that come to mind.

do people still really care about hockey anymore? it seems like it is a dying sport
That remains to be seen. The AHL final drew a full house in Phi.(around 20,000) while the Arena Bowl final drew just over 10,000.

...when we are comparing our national pastime to that fraud they call arena football...Heck, the neigbourhood kids playing road hockey should be able to outdraw that pathetic sport

The Leafs can have Roberts, Newy, Leetch, etc back.It will be up to the players if they are willing to "settle" for $1million a year. I mean that would be tough to take, a whole million dollars a year to play hockey.Domi & Mogilny have stated they are willing to play here for much less than they used to make. The question is whether the Leafs should retain all these older guys, or make the move to a younger quicker team. The new rules will be designe dto speed the game up - can Roberts, etc keep up at their advanced ages? There comes a time for a player to hang 'em up.
Everyone will be playing for less this season, and there will be hundreds of players on the market. For those who feel they are entitled to the big coin, they may be in for a surprise. This new era may force the Leafs to look at making the big changes that are necessary, saying thanks but goodbye to a few older players and bringing in younger ones. Guys like Wellwood,Ling, Coliacaovo(sp), Bell etc. The playing field will be level for all teams.
I have no problem with a cap. At the end of the day teams will need to build and develop farm systems, what a concept!

I am in 100% agreement with Cnd-guy...they have way too many oldies as it is, from that list I'd only like to see Sundin, Mogilny, and maybe Belfour back.

I've heard various answers in regards to the following question, what happens to players contracts during this season? I cant find the definitive, I recall hearing that guys like Leetch and Gonchar etc are unrestricted free agents now? Anyone know? I'm too lazy to search for the info myself by the way... :D

if..

if that were to happen that the nhl would honour 2004-2005 season contracts then the salray cap number would have to be grandfathered in....anything else then that would be stupid....if i see a dispersal draft ill relly lose my cool

Why should the NHL and it's owner honor the 04-05 contracts?

We're going into 05-06 - there will be about 400 NHLPA players that don't have contracts or are free agents of some description. I say cut the large salaries out. If the players won't take less money - then, have a nice career.

Then wait.

I'm sure there'll be a TON of talent out there looking for work.

The players and the PA are bitches- they should have taken the deal early to save the 05 season. But no. No - they won't take a cap. No - salary roll back. No - to linkage. What did they get? Dick. Good. Nice work from the union.

Now the owners have them by the balls.

As for guys like Yashin - wait....see who signs him now. Wanna be a malcontent - then play in Russia or wherever.

As for the Leafs - keep the ones you've got signed, offer a contract to everyone under the cap and see who stays, then...wait.

Lots of ...

... Free Agents but remember the 'old CBA' structure had ...

a. Unrestricted Free Agents;
b. Restricted Free Agents

... and the element of Arbitration. The only big names that I could come up with that would be unrestriced FAs under the old rules were ...

Alexei Zhamnov, Mario Lemieux, Pavol Demitra, Martin St.Louis, Cory Stillman, Gary Roberts, Joe Nieuwendyk, Markus Naslund, Peter Bondra, Miroslav Satan, Peter Forsberg, Paul Kariya, Teemu Selanne, Valerie Bure

Chris Pronger, Sergei Gonchar, Brian Leetch, Sandis Ozolinsh, Glen Murray, Vladmir Malakhov, Alexei Zhitnik, Sergei Zubov

Nicolai Khabibulin, Felix Potvin, Byron Dafoe

... guess we have to wait to see how the new CBA shakes out.
