I was wondering if anyone may know if Loblaws will be going on strike or not, 60% of the products we make at my work are made for loblaws. We will lose jobs if they go on strike, I have searched the toronto star, toronto sun, cp24 and I cant find any up to date information.

Sobeys have their own collective agreements. Don't know about No Frills. There could be spillover effects if Loblaws distribution centres are affected because they won't be able to fill orders for the stores.

Why will you lose jobs? You may be temporarily laid off but they'll need you when the strike ends.

wow 97% of the employees voted to strike. guess they make too much there and can afford to take the summer off with no pay. they should consider themselves lucky to have jobs.

Yea ungratefull bastards. If they don't like it we can bring in immigrants who will work for 4 dollars an hour with no over time for 10 hours just like they have done on Toronto's china town. Oh yea they should also pay a fee to their employer to get the job.

Strike votes that pass are largely meaningless. They're usually in the high 90's. The strike vote doesn't send them out, it only gives the bargaining team the mandate to go out. It's bargaining leverage.

If a strike vote fails on the other hand (which is almost unheard of), it means the bargaining team is out of touch with the membership and misread the situation. It also means a settlement will probably be reached to avoid a labour disruption.

BlahBlah's claims that the labour costs are 10% or greater higher than at their competitors and want to cut benefits, cut the number of full time employees, delay the granting of benefits and apparently change the schedules to decrease flexibility so that part time employees will not be able to find a second job.

I think food companies are under a lot of pressure by Walmart to keep costs low or become irrelevant.
Walmart is moving big into groceries and Loblaws is worried about errosion of market share. A lot of their staffers make over $19.00 per hour and they have to compete with Walmart where everyone makes minimum wage or a tiny amount above that.

A few years ago the Dominion store in my neighbourhood closed down and 2 months later it was re-opened branded as a Food Basics store, a different division of same company. All the staff in their 40's and 50's who had been working there for 20 years were gone and replaced by a bunch of 18 year olds making minimum wage.

There is a lot of pressure in food industry and a lot of service industries to eliminate as many 19.00 - 24.00 per hour jobs as possible and convert them into 9.00 to 12.00 per hour jobs. That means busting old union contracts. Harsh world out there for regular working guy or gal.

Welcome to the free market. Sucks don't it. If groceries store sold groceries and some household goods and got out of the clothing lines, they'd do better.

It's union busting, but it's also middle class busting.

The downside to moving to a service-based economy...

Welcome to the 'Race To The Bottom'.
We are going through these convulsions in the USA currently!

Nothing to worry about though, at least this is what our Corporatist friends say.
Our Globalist friends on the right claim many new great high paying jobs will be created to replace all the good jobs they are destroying of you and your kids. Only problem is we are still waiting for them 'jobs promised' to be created down here! So all we do down here is keep extending UI benefits till our Globalist pals create all them great jobs they have been spouting about the last several years!....

Au contraire my misinformed friend.

Part of the reason Loblaws is doing better of late is because of its... wait for it... clothing line! In fact, they want to expand their clothing sales. The margins on clothing are probably a lot better than on food stuffs.

That would be interesting. The minimum wage in Ontario is $10.25*

http://www.labour.gov.on.ca/info/minimumwage/

*$9.60 for under 18 years of age

Very true!
As your country begins to 'implode' like the USA is, you will have to pick a more secure job not subject to this 'free market' turmoil.

You could get into LE!

LE standards are low, heck you don't even need a college degree.
Pay is great, they still have great Pensions, a strong Union. LE not as dangerous a job as some others, get to carry a gun, cruise around in a fast powerful cop-car, heck if you are into 'macho power tripping', you can even push around disabled people with impunity (just have to claim they 'touched' your gun belt)!
Great benefits plus all the coffee and donuts are free!
As society implodes and crime increases, LE and the Prison Industry is poised to become a prime 'growth industry', like currently is happening in the USA.

Something to look into when you lose your jobs to the wonderful 'free market'......

Reminds me of this article: http://www.sfreporter.com/santafe/article-5188-born-poor.html

Inequality leads to an excess of what Bowles calls “guard labor.” In a 2007 paper on the subject, he and co-author Arjun Jayadev, an assistant professor at the University of Massachusetts, make an astonishing claim: Roughly 1 in 4 Americans is employed to keep fellow citizens in line and protect private wealth from would-be Robin Hoods.

It's all about protecting the 'Haves & the Have Mores' from the peasants!....

This is why LE job standards are low.
The 'Haves & the Have Mores' want to insure their tools in LE stay clueless as to their real purpose......

Thanks for joining in a little late and a little light in the conversation, but we're use to that. That's the 'minimum' qualifications in Canada. I can't say what the situation in the US is though. I know a few friends that applied over the years to get into CSIS, FBI, and the CIA and they certainly were told to have more than High School education. i've only known four buddies from earlier years who applied for a City Force; Two made Chief and one finished as a highly decorated Staff. You don't do that without something between the ears.

As far as our country imploding, we're no where near the horizon for that event; certainly further than the US. Back to sleep Woodie.
