Considering the virus has only been studied for around 6 months, there is still not enough information to really know and most of the studies have had small enough sample sizes that they aren't definitive. The article even discusses not knowing whether you can get reinfected.

And yes, lasting immunity is even more reason to hope for a safe vaccine.
