Looking for some old stuff

Two things.

First, looking for an old computer book store. Stuff like Excel 2000 and similar. Obsolete software manuals. There is a place on St Clair and Danforth but they are only open Saturdays and they closed early when I went there last Saturday. There used to be about 10 of these kind of places in Toronto.

Second, looking for an internal hard drive enclosure with fan cooling for IDE drives. I am only seeing these for SATA drives nowadays. Last time I saw these was at Logic Computers except they went under. I am currently using an uncooled plastic enclosure (only for temporary sessions) and the drive is quite warm when I stop the session. Metal would be better than plastic.

I consult for some mom and pop operations who still have the same hardware and software that they started with 5-15 years ago. They probably won't be upgrading and my niche is helping them use better what they already own.

TIA

ADS technoligies makes a nice HD enclosure.
Built-in fan and power supply.
Connects via firewire.

I think i paid around $50 for it...but can't for the life of me remember where.

I may also be able to help with some of the older s/w.

Gotta be IDE, not firewire and sometimes not USB. These can be old computers on old OS's (often Win95).

TigerDirect.com still has some of them old IDE encloseures
Here's one for $25.
I have one (aluminum) with an 160GB HDD and it doesn't need a cooling fan, it runs fine.

You seem to be looking for one in Toronto, but if you're willing to go online you can check out "Computer Books for Less", associated with "RefurbComputers.ca". Click the link, then select "Computer books" in the lower left. Search for a title you'd like. If you're lucky they'll have something in stock, or send them an email and see if they can help you find one: I've found them to be quite helpful.

Thanks Anynym, that link for books is exactly the sort of thing I was looking for.

Woody, those enclosures are close but all attach via USB or SATA. The ones I seek attach via an IDE cable directly from the motherboard to the enclosure which fits in a 5.25" drive bay. Because the box might be old and running Win95, USB support is iffy or non-existent.

The hard drive thing is not a show stopper as I can always just open up the box and change drives internally. But it is sometimes convenient and I wanted to find out where they might be *before* a situation comes up where it is a hot thing to have to get.

I think they used to be marketed as a security tool where you could take your system hard drive with you although I do not know anyone who actually did that.

I was just a little surprised that they are so hard to find. I saw a SATA version in the tech clearout place at 1150 Sheppard recently but not IDE.

Anyway, I will keep looking. I am sure they will turn up at some used parts store. I do not have an immediate need for one so I can be patient.

My old PC, from 1997, ran Win95 and had two, usb1.0 ports in the back. Used them till upgrading with a PCI card with 5 usb2.0 ports to boost transfer speeds.
My IDE encloseure has the IDE ribbon inside that plugs into the HDD and goes to a usb2.0 port on the other end....it works great. If you have a PCI slot available, it's a cheap simple upgrade that takes about 5 minutes.

Are you talking about a removable tray enclosure? Other than that I'm not sure what you are referring to Internal Enclosure.. why enclose a hard drive if its inside the case?

As for books.. will PDF formats do?
