Do you have Antivirus installed?

Have you tried restarting in safe mode?

If you can figure out the name of the virus, use another computer to google it and find out how to get rid of it.

I had to do a complete DELL restore to the time when I just bought the PC.
That means I lost everything that was saved on my harddrive

Do you only have one hard drive? If so, partition it now with a small partition for Windows to run off of (maybe 10-15 GB) and then use the rest for storage. That way, next time your computer fucks up, you can just reformat the smaller partition and reinstall Windows. All your data will be safe on the other partitions.

Now's the time to do it though. It might be a pain to reinstall Windows all over again, but it'll save you headaches in the future.

It's really easy (assuming you have the original, bootable Windows cd).

1) Put cd into cd-rom.

2) Restart your computer.

3) You will get a blue screen with Windows installation instructions. Make sure to format everything when asked.

4) You will be shown how large your hard drive is and asked if you want to create a partition. Say yes/ok, select the hard drive, and it will ask you how big to make the partition. That depends on how big your drive is. If it's more than 130-140 GB, you'll have to make multiple partitions b/c I think that's the size limit. Just make one small partition for Windows to be installed onto (approx 10-15 GB). Then make another partition with the remainder (or 2+ more partitions if you have more than 130 GB left).

5) It will ask you which partition you want to install Windows on. Select the smallest partition you just made.

6) Voila. Windows installation will continue normally.

Now when your computer fucks up you can either reformat your small partition and reinstall Windows to it, or install Windows on one of the other partitions and run from there.

Keebler Elf,
Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't there a bit more involved than that?
While partitioning like that is a great idea, isn't it best done on a brand new clean hard drive or after a hard drive has undergone a full format?
So there is no confusion about just going in and partitioning your hard drive that you have been working with for a couple years.

It looks like you need to reset you screen resolution.

Right click on screen
> select "Properties"
> select "Settings"
> then change the screen resolution to a higher (finer) setting

Absolutely. And that's why he chooses to reformat when he hits the Windows installation. That happens before the partitioning and before the fresh install.

This is all assuming that you're either willing to lose everything on your existing hard drive or you already have lost everything.

Well, there's your problem. Don't you know that you needed to be TOTALLY drunk. When I'm drunk, I know that I can solve any problems in the world -- to anyone who would listen. :D

Okay. There's a part of the Windows Operating System called the "Registry" which keeps track of what programs should be used to open files which have various "suffixes". E.g. ".doc" should be opened with MS Word, etc.

The dialog which you quoted above suggests that at least that part of the Registry has been lost or corrupted. A re-installation of Windows should help. But there's certainly a question as to what destroyed the data in the first place, and whether it'll be destroyed again, after a re-installation. And, really, nobody can guess that in advance.

One thing to check would be this: if you open a folder in Windows, and check the "Options" (may be under "Tools" ... I'm actually running Linux right now, so I don't have the menus in front of me), then select "File Types", does it seem to have a full selection of file types associated with the "correct" programs? Or do you notice a selection of file types which don't have a program (or the "correct" program) associated with it?
