TORONTO — The third person in Ontario accused of faking cancer for profit in recent months made a brief court appearance Friday.
Toronto police allege Christopher Gordon, 39, pretended to have terminal brain cancer, first making the claim in October 2009 and then collecting $3,000 from a fundraiser organized by his friends.
Gordon, it's alleged, spent the money and then confessed to family and friends this month that he did not have brain cancer.
Sporting glasses and a long beard with a large tattoo the nape of his neck, Gordon declined to speak to the media following his court appearance.
His next scheduled court date is Nov. 30.
On Thursday, police charged Gordon with one count of fraud under $5,000.
The case comes on the heels of two guilty pleas from young Ontario women who faked cancer and collected money.
On Nov. 9, Jessica Ann Leeder of Timmins, Ont., pleaded guilty to defrauding her workplace of thousands of dollars. She will be sentenced on Dec. 21.
A week earlier, Ashley Kirilow, 23, of Burlington, Ont., pleaded guilty to one count of fraud over $5,000 for her unrelated cancer hoax. She still faces six counts of fraud under $5,000.
