Many individuals NOT many posts

A recent post has encouraged this new thread:

Some time ago there was an article in the Ottawa Citizen. I’m no expert in this area but I think it was an example of applied Chaos Theory.

A ship was lost at sea. They got a bunch of scientists together and had them find the most likely current position of the ship. Some worked as a group the others worked independently. Having statistically combined the results of the independent scientists they found that the statistically combined result was significantly more accurate then each individual’s result and much more accurate than the result of those scientists working as a group.

On this board we have very much a chaotic state - a bunch of individuals, a bunch of individuals who seem to collude, and a bunch who make a habit of agreeing with each other because they fear the angry repercussion of the other “credible” individuals. In my opinion those of you who seem to collude and those of you who are so quick to agree with each other lack credibility. Those of you who are defined as credible have something to lose. You can lose your credibility. As soon as you have something to lose any related opinion you express is biased.

On this board, none of us can truly know the character of each individual. Therefore we must not rely on character as a determining factor. Furthermore it is very wrong to conclude that there is a direct reltionship between post count and character.

We need to rely on statistics – numbers. We want as many independent individual’s opinions as possible where each individual MUST feel free to express their opinion. From there we must rely on each other’s intelligence to read as many independent opinions as possible to produce a result that is suitable for the potential client. The more opinions we have the easier it is to eliminate those opinions which are inconsistent.

Any other approach I think is unfair to both the client and the provider.

Careful what you ask for........might result in the thread being closed

In my opinion boards like this one help each hobbist decide where to spend our hard earned money. We are not all the same, opinions do vary, one person may have a good experience an other may have a bad experience they are two side of the same coin, That's life.

All we can do is report on what our experience has been with any one provider and let the rest of the hobbist's decide on what they want to do with that information.

There will always be conflict so I do not think they it can be eliminate totally, but if everyone tried to post on their personal experceince only and ask question only thing should improve.

Bad analogy

Scientists trying to find a lost boat isn't a good analogy. Each scientist had exactly the same goal - to find a particular boat - and was likely using similar methods (i.e. ones based in mathematics) to try to acheive that goal. Accordingly, an averaged result will produce an average estimate of the boat's location.

Contrast that with TERB, where everyone is looking for something different, with their own set of likes and dislikes, their own concept of the perfect experience, their own frame of reference and so on. It'd be like averaging the results of a group of scientists, where some were looking for a boat, but others were looking for a big shoal of fish, and a few were looking for proof of the big bang. Statistics tell you nothing here, because there's no frame of reference to compare data points.

So it comes down to trust - if you're looking for something in particular, you read other people's posts to try to work out if their tastes are like yours, and work based on that.

I take your general point however - people should feel free to post honestly. However, 5 newbies raving about an SP who has been slammed by someone with a zillion posts shouldn't be surprised if most people fail to place their trust in the "statistics".

I agree somewhat with you jughead but disagree with you anything_goes. Unfortunately, I have an exam to prepare for so I don't have time to debate this until, Friday.

The eroticism of Mathematics

I swear, if you had used the words "correlation", "distribution" or "variance" I was going to submit this thread to "PentagonHouse Four-em" (I love the section called "Kinky Compasses on Campus"). As it is, I pleasured myself just imagining all the little charts and graphs going through my mind. Who needs women when you have equations with their curves and surfaces?

Hey, babe, what's your sine? ;)

Forget Sting and his Tantric sex. I'm into Quadratic sex. It rocks you to your roots. You gotta be comfortable with binomiality, though.

Do massage parlours have body slide rules?

For the record, I am 2.718 standard deviations from the norm.

(alright, I confess, I was a math major. It's not everyday you get to combine sex and math)

Gntlmn,

This appears to have been your first post since 2002! Let me guess; you've been working out the value of pi by hand to the billionth decimal place!!

Eroticism of Mathematics

Thanks, Anything_Goes

Bobman, my time has been spent in the time-honoured accounting practice of subtracting from my bank account into the hands of women who subtract their clothes from their bodies, primarily at the 'Mate.

I was going to throw in a Pi joke but I was obviously too obtuse.

STOP IT!!!!

(Incidentally, if you read Carl Sagan's book, "Contact", he has a neat little thing about Pi at the end -- you'll have to read it to find out, it wasn't in the movie)

Yes, anything_goes, I know I am supposed to be studying but I just had to relate this before I go back at it.

Gntlmn, you should understand this the rest of you I don't know.

I just made my lovely roomate go "2.718 to the power of 1000!". The lovely naked lady was just getting out of the shower when I walked in. Her chin dropped in surprise and she squealed "eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!"

You should keep a natural log of the number of times that happens :)
