A student in Mississauga claims the administration at his Catholic high school is trying to smother and suffocate the gay straight alliance group he is a part of by not allowing it to express itself in an open public way.
At issue is a poster the group wanted to put up in the high school which included a Harvey Milk quotation that said: " “All young people, regardless of sexual orientation or identity, deserve a safe and supportive environment in which to achieve their full potential” .
The school officials thought the term 'sexual orientation' in the poster was too bold for a Catholic high school and wanted the more banal term 'self expression' substituted for 'sexual orientation'.
The Mississauga Catholic school was forced to allow the existence of the gay straight alliance club after the provincial legislature passed Bill 13, the Accepting Schools Act, in March 2013 which was specifically targeted to prohibit separate schools from banning gay straight alliance groups from existing in their schools.
But, Catholic school administrators seem to have found a way to castrate or subvert the effects of bill 13 by thwarting the ability of these clubs to express themselves freely and openly.
