Mississauga Catholic School Trying to Smother, Repress Gay Straight Alliance Club

A student in Mississauga claims the administration at his Catholic high school is trying to smother and suffocate the gay straight alliance group he is a part of by not allowing it to express itself in an open public way.

At issue is a poster the group wanted to put up in the high school which included a Harvey Milk quotation that said: " “All young people, regardless of sexual orientation or identity, deserve a safe and supportive environment in which to achieve their full potential” .

The school officials thought the term 'sexual orientation' in the poster was too bold for a Catholic high school and wanted the more banal term 'self expression' substituted for 'sexual orientation'.

The Mississauga Catholic school was forced to allow the existence of the gay straight alliance club after the provincial legislature passed Bill 13, the Accepting Schools Act, in March 2013 which was specifically targeted to prohibit separate schools from banning gay straight alliance groups from existing in their schools.

But, Catholic school administrators seem to have found a way to castrate or subvert the effects of bill 13 by thwarting the ability of these clubs to express themselves freely and openly.

Ah, the sanctimonious Catholic Church. Defender of Pedophile Priests but naysayers to a school club. They always said Religion and Politics don 't mix!

I hope the kids win out!

It is a Roman Catholic High School, I would expect it to hue to Roman Catholic doctrine in the same way that I would expect a Friends High School to respect the tenants of the Religious Society of Friends.

They can say it all they want, who ever they are, but they would be very wrong.

Yet a publicly funding group trying to undermine legislation by the same people that fund them is problematic.

Assuming they have to approve accepting public funds, there must have been a whole slew of conditions for both sides. If this situation is not covered by their agreement by some provision, well then, the deal was poorly written.

Perhaps the Catholic Board if not happy with things now perhaps they should go back to the "old days" and PAY to have their kids go to school!
Then watch enrolment DROP!
I never did understand the Catholic vs Public system anyway. You want your kids to learn and know Religion TAKE THEM TO CHURCH!

Love it, let's take it further.

If you get mugged our shot, you have to go to the police station to report it and they will only look at what they can see from the station.

If you are hit by a car, fall down a flight of stairs, or contract pneumonia, you have to make it to the hospital before we will take care of you.

Yes because life threatening events that apply equally to every Canadian are analogous to becoming a 'good' Catholic.

Because the Protestant Schools have become the secular schools.*

As to doing away with the Roman Catholic Schools, since they are provided for in the Constitution Act, 1867 (The BNA Act), good bloody luck with that.

* Is that the fault of the Roman Catholics? I'd say it got it's jump start with the Upper Canada Rebellion.

The Post Office was in the constitution too, but that hasn't stopped Harper from dismantling it
Also just because we are forced to pay for these shitty schools because of the constitution. doesn't give them the right to act unconstitutional.
