They're on to the Quarter-Finals

Too bad Gomi didn't make it through...
But its largely a North American audience who are mostly familiar with American MMA (meaning UFC)...

MMA's King's Quest: CBS Poll to Choose the Greatest Fighter in MMA's History

Does that mean in all the many, many years that MMA has been in existence? How many years is that anyway?

Are there any websites where I can find detailed histories of these well known fighters ? Details like who they've fought, when and results ?

For someone who's reletively new (I started following this sport about 2 years ago) to this fight game like me, it's really hard to suggest who's been the best fighter because I just don't know whom they've beaten or whom they've lost to and when. The problem I have with these fights I've seen on TV is that most of them are old fights and they don't even tell you the dates.

Anderson Silva all the way. Put an eye patch on this guy and you'll call him Sagat! His Muay Thai is just awesome to watch, creative and deadly and he's versed in BJJ too. His movements and transition is just silky smooth. Fedor is awesome too but if I was to choose one in terms of style, Anderson Silva is it. BJ Penn is awesome at BJJ and trash talking but his striking is different from Silva. GSP is badass too but has a lot to prove to stay as champion, not the best trash talker either.

Since the early 90's....Modern MMA was brought in to the world with the emergence of the UFC in the North America and Pancrase in Japan....Both organizations in 1993....

If you want more background on the fighters, Wikipedia is a pretty good source of information....

I'd say to compare the greatest players/fighters in any individual sports, you'd have to compare the dominance of that player/fighter in his weight class/division during that player/fighter's prime; of-course the level of competion would have to be taken into consideration.

If we can agree on that being a measuring stick, I'd vote for Anderson Silva because of all the fights I've seen him in (I must have seen about a dozen new and old fights over the last 2 years) he only lost once during his early years fighting in Brazil but that was only due to a cut as they were fighting bare knuckles. Maybe I miss some but I haven't seen him in any fight where he didn't overpowered and dominated the opponent.

I've seen only 4 or 5 of Fedor's fights and while he also dominated but I can't vote for him because I just haven't seen him fight enough. Same for the other fighters mentioned here, I've seen all of them winning and losing fights so their dominance pale comparing to Andonson Silva's, and Silva has beaten and dominated many great fighters.

The second fighter I'd vote for would be Vandelaide Silva (excuse me if I spelled his name wrong) because he was so dominant and ..SCARY ..when he was fighting during his prime.
