Is this entire segment of the industry a scam? Do any of those rocket sticks or portable wireless modems work? Any of them? Every review site in existence seems to contain a myriad of horror stories from people who have had awful experiences with sticks or turbos etc. Frequent disconnects, overheating, one-bar service, impossible to install. I had settled on the Rogers Mifi as a workable compromise, only to find out they've been recalled!! Good grief.

They are heavily throttled. First bit of information is really quick. After that, it is DSL from my worst nightmare speed. They are almost as slow as dial-up modems.

I've got the Fido stick. It's the only way I can get online where I live (no cable or high speed phone lines). And while it's not great, the fees are (for the lack of a better word) ABUSIVE, and when I call them with question I feel like I'm talking to some kindergarten kid somewhere. It's the only game in town right now for me so............

It DOES work.... Better at night than during the day in my area.

Update. I bought a Wind Mobile Huawei E181 stick for $80. No contract, no setup fee, works out of the box, and unlimited data for $45/month. Works blazing fast from my perspective, but its probably not good for gaming. But email, web surfing, and photo downloading is super fast. The big downside is that the unlimited data is only good in Toronto, Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton, and Vancouver, so not much good for road trips. Meets my specific needs though. I can't believe they have unlimited data for a lower cost than the big 3 charge for 1GB/month. WTF?? Wind says that after 5GB/month they will slow you down a bit, but no extra cost.

Samsung Galaxy S phone has a feature called mobile hotspot. It allows you to use your 3G data connect to surf the web on other devices (laptops, ipads etc). The telecos don’t exactly promote this capability but its freakin awesome and makes a data stick redundant if you ask me.

I believe Rogers and Telus are coming out with versions of this phone.

Its called tethering and it can be done on most smartphones. Sometimes the telco knows and allows it, sometimes they charge extra. tetherberry.com is a program that supposedly optimizes the tethering capacity of your blackberry. It didn't make sense for my personal circumstances (my bb is corporate and has some firewalls on it), and I am not sure how speed compares to sticks. But you are correct in that it is an option worth looking into.

it's not Samsung only. all the latest Android devices have the feature built in. you pay an extra $20 per month to use the feature

That’s not correct. Moto Droid is not avail in Canada. Samsung is the only mfg device in the Canadian market with this feature natively in the phone (with no extra charges beyond the data usage). Android 2.2 OS will have this standard but again this is not yet released in Canada.
