remember the hedge fund founder (name i cant recall Isreal maybe?) who ripped off like half a billion dollars, i think he got 20 years.

Think of it this way...
If an 'average' person earns $50,000/year, it takes them 20 years to earn $1,000,000, assuming they are working 8 hours a day, for the entire year. In essence, a person and their wealth are literally the same thing, as a person has invested a substantial portion of their life doing productive labor in order to accumulate their money. To steal the million dollars from this person, is to literally take away twenty years of their life.
The punishment should be stern in my opinion.

He won't be getting Club Fed; there would be a riot. With that length of sentence he'll be getting many visits from buddies named Bubba Dover and his brother Ben.
Put him in the same cell as Conrad Black. Listening to that pompous bore will drive ol' Madoff nuts inside a couple weeks.
