"Mousetrap" play enters 60th year with plan to expand

By Mike Collett-White | Reuters – Fri, Nov 25, 2011

LONDON (Reuters) - The big mystery may be why it hasn't happened before, but Agatha Christie's "The Mousetrap" -- the longest-running show in the world -- will finally tour Britain in 2012 to mark its 60th birthday.

The play's diamond jubilee falls on November 25, 2012, and on Friday as it enters its 60th year, organisers announced a series of events to celebrate the landmark.

Friday's performance will be the 24,587th, yet for all its popularity, the show's producer said he wanted more.

It had a great run here for probably about 30 years. Must have seen it at least a half dozen times including with my kids.

I was driving back from downtown this afternoon up Avenue Rd and passed Bedford. Thought of the Mousetrap right away.

The play is long-running, not because it is a particularly good play (even for Agatha Christie), but because it is an institution. The producers are consciously working for the "Longest Running" title. It is so successful because of the marketing, especially to tourists. Many so-called "theatre tours" include it as one of their featured plays. It is good entertainment and worth the money to see it but there are many much greater plays that have opened (and closed) in London since it has opened.
