Was considering a move to XP Pro but have heard both of good and horror stories.

Any recommendations/suggestions/comments from the professional computer guys or the computer hobbyists out there?
Is this something a computer amateur like me will require alot of help with?

Current hardware is PIII 700, 10Gig hard drive with 3Gig free, 128 RAM.

Thanks

XP pro is a great solution for many people.

When it comes to networking it is user friendly and about as simple as can be.

BUT it may not be compatable with all your present hardware. Check out available drivers before you jump.

Make a list of all the important applications you use. Check with the manufacturer to ensure they run on XP.

Far to often you have to upgrade to a newer version. Do this research to identify the cost, and ensure you have the upgrades available.

As has been said, your hardware can use some upgrading.

To get Java, simply download and install the latest Netscape.

I need install Java Virtual machine on my XP machine.
Microsoft doesn't seem too helpful in making this happen.

How should I proceed?
Go to http://java.sun.com/getjava. It will detect what version of Java you have. If you don't have the latest version it will step you through the download/installation process.

I'm not surprised Micro$oft isn't very helpful. Using Java doesn't tie you to their products.

XP PRO has the ability to emulate all previous Windows versions.

Compatibilty in software should not be a big issue. But HARDWARE could have a few issues. Check for updated drivers for printers, scanners, cameras and all of you I/O devices. Be aware you might find yourself in need of these devices. I would also reccomend you be running a Pentium 4 or equal machine. Celerons are not what they appear to be. Let's say you are running a CELERON 2.0GHZ chip, you have an effective 1.4GHZ speed. Use a .70 factor for calculating celeron speeds.

Don't know much myself but my brother in law is expert in computers. He bought xp pro and then got rid of it. Now swears by Windows 2000 pro. For what is worth, hope it helps.

u are asking in the right place.
i recommand u to use windows 2000 pro instead of any windows xp.

because windows xp is slow comparing to win2000.
windows 2000 is the best OS,

and windows 2000 is cheaper than xp too.
xp pro cost about 500$ you can probably use it to buy a new pc instead.

if u are willing to buy a windows xp, then go to any computer store(store that only sell computers, not futureshop) u will get the pc and they will instead xp for you free.

Win XP

I run Windows 2000 at work and it takes forever to startup. I have Windows XP at home (upgraded from Windows ME) and I love it. Is definitely much faster and better than any previous version, including Win 2000 with all the service packs installed.
It is big though so you do need a large hard drive and lots of RAM (I have it on a 40 gig HD with 512 MB RAM on an AMD 1 gig Athlon Machine).
