I'm looking for advice on MP3 players. Any comments would be appreciated. How do they work? What would you recommend when purchasing? Are they better than just carrying a CD player?

They still have bugs

Be careful in your selection and make sure you can return them if not satisfied with them. I bought a few and returned them all. Was not happy with the results: poor sound quality, pops & clicks in the playback, wouldn't read some formats, some limited songs played to the first 150, or 200, or 250 songs and would not play the rest (one CD I burned had 270 mp3 songs and I use this CD as a test for the mp3 player.) The mp3 players I looked for were ones like the "Sony Walkman" type that advertised an ability to play multiple formats, including CD-R's you can burn on your PC, since these are the most economical and easiest to make. This was over a year ago, maybe they have made improvements since then.

So, if I interpret your comments right, you still have to burn the MP3 on to a disc, whether mini or regular, but you can burn more of them then if converted as you used to have to do? I thought you simply uploaded them to the player and they played from memory the same as on your harddrive.

Great Winston, that was exactly the summary I was looking for. We already have several Sony CD Walkmans around and I couldn't see the point in buying another one just because it would play MP3s. The young brute's tastes change so rapidly and mostly he just listens in his bedroom on the computer anyway. As well, I still have a box of 40 or so CDRWs waiting to be used. It sounds to me that the new CD/MP3 players are simply another gimick to get us to replace our existing electronics, but not with something earth shatteringly better. That is a pet peeve of mine.

Like Nintendo - Super Nintendo - Nintendo 64 - Gamecube. Each edition requiring a new round of games. At least Playstation to Playstation 2 is backwards compatible. The kid asked for a portable MP3 player, but I think I will let him save the money for an iPod himself and in the meantime he can continue to use up our existing stock of CDs.

are you using the mp3 player like cd player
or are you looking for a mp3 player on the go (jagging,workout...etc)
ipod is good for lightly mobile, for home, for car, for friends house...etc
but if you want some extreme mobile say, workout, jagging, camping, skiing...etc
then ipod is not a good product, because it has moving part
get those flash memory base mp3 player
difference
ipod is HD base, bigger storage, but contain moving part. so it would skip or damage easily, and will die like all HD in matter of time.
Flash memory base MP3 player, contain no moving part, never skip, and will out never die (unless you beat it badly)
but more expensive.

so it's your call

I bought a Nike-Phillips MP3 player for working out. It works like a charm and is great for running or jogging. Only downside is the head phone broke about 6 months in but it was easily replaced.

Stay Away from...

I-Rock mp3 players!

They are terrible! Poorly put together and if you ever require additional accessories, software, etc- be prepared to pay large duty taxes and wait forever for the order to be shipped.

I've heard nothing but praises for the iPod!

Well rumor has it in the Apple Offices here in Canada that there will b a cheaper (probably 10 gig) ipod available after MacWorld in Jan.
FYI i have 3 ipods i use for various things not just as an mp3 player i transport video and very large files on them as they do work as a straight forward firewire drive/ I also have 2 mini disc players around, if you are looing to run jog and aerobics or anything physical the ipod is a hard drive based system and like a hard drive can skip or even get damaged. Now i have never come across any damaged ipods do to that sort of situation. MHO i prefer my ipod and the different play lists i can set up or just allow it to randomly play whatever is on my ipod. I have had one since they were first brought out two years ago and it is still fine and no battery problems except i get maybe a half hour less battery life.
I say ipod.

Was just at a Warehouse sale, they had 20Gb Nomads and 20Gb Lyra's for $199. Only drawback I found was the weight.

Lightest I saw was the Panasonic. Nice thing was the memory was Secure Digital media (like my Palm), so easy to pop in and out.
