MS security essentials experience

I had been using AVG for years on my Vista Desktop and laptop. Then I read a thread here, referring to some studies suggesting that AVG was the worst of the anti-virus programs, and that MS security essentials (MS SE)was one of the best.

I deinstalled AVG and installed MS SE, and everything seemed fine for a while. Last week, MS SE would not update its virus definitions, and I deinstalled and reinstalled. Then it told me (incorrectly) that my Vista was not an authorized version, at which point I gave up and deinstalled it again. I then installed AVAST, which seems fine.

Any better suggestions? Is it worth it to buy Kapersky?

If you know you have a legit copy of Vista give M$ a call and they should correct it over the phone. M$ is on a mission to go after all them thousands of unauthorized versions of their OSs being used and may have mistook your copy for a pirated version.

Nothing wrong with Avast. Been using Avast on one of my PCs since 2006 with no issues whatsoever.

Keep a lookout for Kaspersky Internet Security going on sale. You can generally get if for $39 for three machines for 1 year.

Kaspersky has been the highest-rated anti-virus software for many years. Last year Bitdefender got an honourable mention because it was cheaper(!).

I have tried both. Kaspersky is hands down the best by a large margin.

I don't understand people who buy expensive computers, load them with expensive software and then use free or grade-z anti virus software. Makes no sense.

The first time you get a virus on a laptop or netbook, you will kick yourself for not having installed Kaspersky.

I had to clean two family machines last year. One was "protected" by Rogers, the other by MacaFee. It's just not worth the hassle. My advice: Get Kaspersky!! (Or run Ubuntu).

I don't need to. Microsoft Updates work fine, it was only MS SE that thought the copy was unauthorized.

My neighbours desctop got infected by a nasty virus, even if he ran MS SE.

My advice: Get Kaspersky!!
Thanks for the advice.

+1.....Linux is the best AV out there.....

This is why I feel confident with Microsoft Security Essentials on my dual boot system. I'm careful when surfing with Windows but go anywhere and everywhere with Linux and don't worry about a thing.

MSE has been working fine for me. Like Wood said, if it's a legit copy of Windows, call 'em up.
As for your neighbours, how did they get infected? Downloading files and opened an executable which was malicious?
Or through some site? Where are they surfing? lol

I don't need to. Vista works fine, MS Update works. My neighbour is a 65 year old librarian, not surfing anything you would look at.
