MSN Messenger replacement

Hello All,

Can anyone recommend a good alternative chat only service to MSN Messenger now that the death switch is activated?

I used Yahoo messenger for awhile several years ago but got hacked there so I'm gun shy to return.

Something simple where personal contact info can be kept without the contact having to put that info out there.

I don't know about the personal info and you must be aware of Skype which MS is using to replace Messenger. ICQ may be an option though it's been a very long time since I have used it.
