anywhere from $49.99 - $699.99 depending on the make model year how bad the exhaust pipes are (if they are rusted tight they may need replacing)....

Import? Domestic?

I bet if it's a straight muffler replacement on a 4 cyl domestic car you could get one for Under $100.00 possibly as low as $69.99

At the dealership, they wanted about $600 to replace the muffler on my car. Other shops could not do the work because the muffler was not available. Went to a small muffler shop that bends its own pipes and stuff, and they did a bit of a custom job for about $200. Place is Zorro Muffler on Stanfield in Mississauga.

I got a new catalytic converter and muffler, parts and labour around $280. I didn't need the receipt, think he forgot about the tax.

I think it's a little more than the muffler. The bracket holding it up has come loose (and is very rusty) so it may need replacing as well.

More like $250 at speedy. Speedy uses Walker mufflers.

I had really bad experiences at Midas a number of years ago.
So did I. Stay away from Midas, a bad, bad company.

I took a good look at it and it's just the hanger that holds it to the car. It's rusted through and broken, leaving the muffler loosely supported (it's not dragging or anything). Still, it jostles up and down easily so the hanger needs replacing (good call Mack!).

The muffler looks to be in pretty good condition but there are a couple rust spots so it may be time for a new muffler as well. But we'll see what they say.

The owner had it tested recently to pass emissions and there was no problem so it's still got at least some life left in it.

What's the ballpark cost for replacing a muffler? $500? Not for a premium brand car.
Cherry Bombs go for $29, Thrush maybe a bit more at $39.:D

Seriously, watch out for the warranty for life. Some companies sell you the system with free replacement of the muffler, but get you on replacing the tailpipe etc. Plus they don't like it when you own the same vehicle for more than ten years.

If you can do it yourself...................

...............all you need is a tail pipe cutter ( can be borrowed at no cost at the CDN tire service counter under their tool loaner program ) and a new muffler.
I was able to do my second car ( Honda Accord ) for under $110 bucks. You just cut off the old muffler and hange the new on in its place then you connect bolt the 2 pieces together with a ''U'' bolt.

P.S. grease the rubber hangers to get them off and put them back on,
