My rates go by the hour. About 180-200 CDN$. When I am not taking calls, I am providing service that is my profession.

When I take calls, I talk about what I can do for them, what I can't do for them and what I won't do for them and based on that we negotiate a price and how long I will provide them service.

When the date is set for me to provide the service, they phone me and provide me precise instructions about how to get to the job site. They get anxious, if I cannot deliver the goods. They get anxious if I have to skip out on another higher priority job and don't have time for them.

I am an IT professional. This kind of work sounds too familiar here.

I had a guy like you, an IT professional, let me rephrase that a Recovery Expert in my office a few months ago when I asked him to recover my crashed hard disk data. He booted it up a few times, put in some secret floppies, typed a few cryptic messages and then said: It's all gone! I received an invoice for 780 dollars. I tell you I'm in the wrong profession.

What a crock. There isn't an IT person in the country that gets that kind of money, even in Alberta.
How many years experience do you have??

There are plenty of IT companies that bill $200 or more per hour to their clients, that just does not mean the guy doing the work is making that. But I know an IT consultant who works out of his house, with no staff, whose billing rate is $1,500 per day, and he is always booked well in advance. But he is a very senior, high-powered guy.
