My Shitty Week.......

Well I wondered when it would happen and it finally did.... Last Thursday my car was stolen along with my camera equipment.

Got the car back within hours so I have my car... Insurance said that the contents weren't covered under comprehensive. Check with my Contents insurance (incidentally all the items and serial numbers were listed in the contents insurance for just this reason)

Sucks to be me eh? Here's the kicker, my insurance company had sent out a letter days prior to tell me they were declining my contents insurance due to a building on the property that was they felt was a liability .... a 100 year old barn that could not be torn down due to some city ordinance and is over 100 yards from the house.

So, they fucked me on my claim because they were quick to cash a cheque and then send it back .... I think they should have paid interest on the money personally, they had the money for 2 months.

So nedless to say I had to go out and replace the equipment, a nice new Nikon camera is coming to me which is a better camera than I was using, the digital is something I'm looking into .... maybe an D-100 since it'll take the same lenses as the Niknon SLR ... It's a $6,000 loss I get to write off at the end of the year I guess .... Happy Birthday to Dave

Hey Dave, I can really understand how you must feel. First you get screwed by someone who robbs you then you get screwed by the insurance company. I say why the F**K do we pay for insurance when it costs us to claim something or we aren't covered at all.

Five yrs ago I parked my car in a parking lot and went into a store to do some shopping. When I came out there was a nasty dent in my rear bumper! At first I didn't think anything of it and took my car to the dealership. When I found out it was going to be $600.00 to repair it I flipped. It was just a dent for God's sake!

Called my insurance broker and told him a "hypothetical" story to get his take on it. He called me back and told me to have the car fixed myself. Why? Because if i made a claim the company was going to increase my rates by 100/yr for a period of at least 8 yrs! This bumper was going to cost me $800.00 through the insurance company!

What is wrong with this picture?

For any of you in the insurance buisness on this board I will apologize in advance. Go after those that cause the accidents and raise the liability rates not those that play fairly and honestly.

Ok.....whenever dealing with your insurance Broker, never forget that you are his "personal" little Bitch. The Insurance company is one of the rare places where straight men can get fucked right up the ass without Vaseline.....

Hey Dave,

I didn't have my vehicle stolen, but I am selling it to pay off the loan, since I live near the subway and don't need it. But I love to drive and am going to miss the old beast.

And I'm turning 40. That's depressing enough, but on top of that, I haven't had sex in two weeks. So although I can't offer sex because everyone here will yell at me, I can offer to buy you and me each a drink or two, to drown our birthday sorrows in.

And in case you can't make it, have one for me anyway.

hey Dave...

Sorry to hear about the theft. Are you able to say whereabouts you were parked? Was it at a "green P" lot? The reason I ask is because my car has been broken into several times at a couple of lots downtown Toronto. Since then, I never leave anything valuable in my car.

It's not just you Dave, Insurance companies screw all of us.

A fair comment Cardinal Fang, but that's not how the Insurance Industry works. Everybody pays into a pool for insurance, and the companies take out of that pool to pay for claims. When too many claims are submitted and not enough funds in the pool are available, everyone has to pay in. Repairs to cars are not what cause significant increases to insurance. It's those who "claim" they are injured, want time off work and money for pain and suffering - ACCIDENT BENEFITS - the people who scam the insurance companies, and commit fraud.

Exactly BigGuy, I worked in accident rehab for 10 years and never stopped being amazed at the lengths that people will go to in order to stay on benefits.

Remember the Seinfeld episode where George has hurt his leg and is using a cane? His new boss gives him keys to his own washroom etc. Then he forgets which side the cane should have been on and of course eventually gets caught.

Unfortunately, that scenario is only funny on tv. It's remarkably common place and it is sucking the money out of all of us.

I was loading up after a photo shoot ... the pair were probably watching me load up and then waited for their opportunity. No pictures taken as they were all writen to CD and the Memory cards erased (habbit of erasing cards when uploaded so that I don't load a full card that I have to erase when using the digital camera).

I heard all kinds of stories from retailers about "today's equivalent" but all I wanted was replacement or current value, I almost feel like taking a vigilante approach to the whole thing, but that wouldn't do anything to help the situation.

About the only good that came out of it is that I get to buy the cameras that I was thinking of getting, now I just have to re-organize my finances to do it.

It's too bad they didn't wreck the car... I have to renew the plates on it and get the emissions done...lol

Now that you mention it, I havent thought about sex all week .... maybe that will make things better... or at least take my mind off of it.

Sex makes everything better.

And yes, the blue beast was stolen once, but unfortunately the police recovered it. The thieves took it for a nice joy ride, and since the seats were all unhooked I'm assuming they did some moving or something. Then, because they didn't like my kid's taste in pop CDs, they scratched them all and left them in the van.

I was hoping it would never come home. The loan would have been paid off.

But back to the point, sex does make the rest of the world disappear. It's hard to be angry or depressed when you have a nice hard cock in your . . . . (insert available orifice name here).

Oops, sorry, that of course was from my perspective.

If it doesn't make things better , it sure takes your mind off things... lol ... I was thinking about some of the things over the past week yesterday driving out to replace some of my equipment.

Apart from the 20 seconds between finding my car missing and calling 911 I haven't "freaked out" or been overly wound up. I've been too calm about the whole thing, which worries me.

I'm still in denial over the whole thing happening, I guess subconciously that I want the whole thing behind me as I can't rectify the situation short of finding the guy and ... ok won't go there.

I spent my Birthday talking to family over the theft instead of enjoying their company. Everyone keeps asking me if I'm OK since I seem to be unaffected emotionally by this.

I'll get over it and I'll remember "that which doesn't kill me, makes me stronger" ...

you'll be OK...

Hey Dave,

When a theft like that happens the first time, it can be a bit traumatic.

My boss had his Porsche stolen from his garage - it had to be an inside job. The thief knew where to find the keys. My boss took a long time to get over it.

In your case Dave, it was a crime of opportunity. So I guess that made it easier for you to get over it. It was nothing personal.

That sucks Dave. I can't imagine how I would feel if my camera equipment was stolen like that. But I have had golf equipment stolen from my car. So I can imagine.

Now, I passed this by a friend of mine who is an adjuster, and she feels you have a good chance of winning this one with the insurance company.

If the equipment and their serial numbers are listed on your policy as you say, the company cannot cancel coverage just by mailing a letter. They must give reasonable notice so that you can obtain other coverage.

Go to the superintendent of insurance and file a complaint if you have to. The keys are 1) to prove that they extended coverage (and you do this by showing the policy declaration with th items listed) and 2) that they did not give you adequate notice to find alternate coverage, which is normally accepted to be 21 days.

We I got my D100 and lenses home, I called the insurance company and had them listed before I even opened the packages.

Dave,

Had you received this letter prior to the loss? My understanding is that if you did not receive it prior to the loss you could be considered covered and you should speak to a lawyer (at least a phone call).

Whenever my insurance has changed I've received registered letters so the insurance company can confirm my acknowledgement. If you've received the letter prior to the incident you're probably out of luck.

In general I never take an insurance company at their word. They know people are unaware of their rights.

They sent it out a week before it had happened. Maybe they stole the equipment???....lol I was looking for insurance to replace the coverage that wasn't supplied ....

Unfortunately I'm SOL on this, even after talking to a few people who know the business.
