Ok, first of all I'm not saying I like or dislike VC. Frankly, imo there are only a handful of NBA players that are the real deal.
But I do understand where VC was coming from when he voiced his opinion on being traded and pushed the issue. I've been a sports fan for the last 30 years and played just about every sport there is. I try not to miss any NBA, NFL or Tennis matches/games and the one thing I've seen over the years were great athletes wasting away on a team because they think and hope one day management will FINALLY start surrounding them with talented, hungry players. On average NBA player’s careers are only about 4 years. In this time injuries, playing time and other unforeseen circumstances can really end your career fast. That is why within this window it's best for the athlete to feel confident management will do there best to give them a chance to win a title.
If you look at all the great players over the years that wasted precious time playing for a team that wasn’t going anywhere you would be amazed. They could of left earlier and joined a team that's trying to win a ring but no they stayed because of "loyalty" or bad agents.. A few that come to mind would have to be Charles Barkley, Dan Marino, Barry Sanders and Karl Malone. Others that almost didn’t win the big one were John Elway, Clyde Drexler and David Robinson. These guys finally won but very late in there careers and if I was them I would’ve left the team years ago to win *rings* in my prime.
I love all these guys I mentioned and I think all should be Hall of Famers but I would have respected them if they wanted to go to another team for a chance for a title. Just think if Marino had left after 6 years and played for the NYG, Packers or Redskins. He would’ve had a few rings by now because these are teams that will do anything/ sign anyone to win a championship. Just think if Barry Sanders would ov left the Lions after 5-6 years and played for Pitt or Phily? Not only would he have just about every record in the book (because he finally would be running behind a great offensive line) he would own a few rings. If Barkley had left the sixers earlier after Dr.J & Moses left and joined the Bulls or the Nicks? David Robinson finally won a ring because they signed Tim Duncan or else he would never have won anything even though he was in the top 5 in the league for 10+ years for just about ever category.
I'm a Raptors fan and I would LOVE for them to win a ring but I cant blame V.C, T-mac, Damon for wanting out because they don’t want to go though their 4th, 5th, 6th (rebuilding stage). I mean their career clocks are ticking and they should be allowed to be happy and playing for a championship. The bottom line in pro sports is it's a business first just like when they want to trade you overnight to another team. They don’t think about how it will affect you, your family or all the blood sweat and tears you gave them over the years. So why should it be any different for the playas to do?
Come on, would YOU honestly want to play for the Raps with the management we have?????
My advice to young talented, hungry players would be. Give the organization several years and see what there long time goals are and if you’re not convinced and feel that they are happy just turning out a profit every year and not really after a title then get yourself traded while you’re still healthy and hungry..
And as for not getting anything in return for V.C like I said our management sucks.
