What are you suggesting Bush should do about it?bbking said:... with Bush and gang freaking out about this, wouldn't they have to approve of this move by the speaker to hold talks with a foriegn leader?
If not, I can understand Bush's concern here - countries need to speak with one voice on the public stage ... this move by the Speaker is above her pay grade.

And from the Israeli newspaper Haaretz:We have made it clear to high-ranking officials, whether they be Republicans or Democrats, that going to Syria sends mixed signals, signals in the region and, of course, mixed signals to President Assad.
And by that I mean, you know, photo opportunities and/or meetings with President Assad lead the Assad government to believe they're part of the mainstream of the international community, when, in fact, they're a state sponsor of terror; when, in fact, they're helping expedite, or at least not stopping, the movement of foreign fighters from Syria into Iraq; when, in fact, they have done little to nothing to rein in militant Hamas and Hezbollah; and when, in fact, they destabilize the Lebanese democracy.
There have been a lot of people who have gone to see President Assad: some Americans, but a lot of European leaders, high- ranking officials. And yet we haven't seen action. In other words, he hasn't responded.
It's one thing to send a message. It's another thing to have the person receiving the message actually do something.
So the position of this administration is that the best way to meet with a leader like Assad or people from Syria is in the larger context of trying to get the global community to help change his behavior.
But sending delegations hasn't worked. It's just simply been counterproductive.
Got that? The Israelis are passing a message thru Pelosi to tell the Syrians to calm down.Israel's political and military leadership has been preparing in recent weeks for the possibility of a Syrian attack on the Golan Heights that will start as a result of a "miscalculation" on the part of the Syrians, who may assume that Israel intends to attack them.
Israel, however, has delivered a calming message, and has no plans to attack its northern neighbor.
According to information Israel received, the Syrians are concerned that the United States will carry out an attack against Iran's nuclear installations in the summer, and in parallel Israel would strike Syria and Lebanon.
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, who visited IDF forces in the North last week, heard an intelligence assessment and was informed of the dangers of a Syrian "miscalculation."
Following his visit to the forces in the field, a decision was made to publicly address the concerns of a possible deterioration with the Syrians, and to send a message that Israel has no intention of attacking Syria, nor is there any coordinated plan with the U.S. for a joint attack against Iran.
The speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, is scheduled to meet with Syrian President Bashar Assad in Damascus today, and will deliver a message of calm from Israel.
"We hope the message will be understood," political sources in Israel said yesterday. "The question is whether Assad is looking for an excuse ... so that he can carry out an attack against Israel in the summer, or whether this is a mistaken assessment."

You have the evidence that the Reagan transition team did this without either the knowledge or agreement of the Carter Administration?WoodPeckr said:LOL!!!
Not really!
There is a precedent for this set by Ronnie Reagan!
Back during Carter's administration Reagan's Team held 'secret negotiations' with Iran to win freedom for US Hostages being held back then.
At least Nancy is doing it out in the open and not under the table like Reagan's neocons prefered.....![]()
In 1997, "…a congressional delegation led by Rep. Dennis Hastert (R-IL) which met with Colombian military officials, promising to “remove conditions on assistance” and complaining about “leftist-dominated” U.S. congresses of years past that “used human rights as an excuse to aid the left in other countries.” Hastert said he would to correct this situation and expedite aid to countries allied in the war on drugs and also encouraged Colombian military officials to “bypass the U.S. executive branch and communicate directly with Congress.”
The same reason he became President in 2000 and 2004.red said:is that right? why doesn't the press call him on that?

DonQuixote said:Yes, as Speaker of the House she has more
rights - that's obvious. She has the rights
of the lead legislator.
She also has more duties.
For every right there is a corresponding duty.
