NEF picture format

I have some digital photographs in NEF format.

I can not open the pictures with Adobe Photo shop CS2.

I can open the pictures with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, but I see just a crappy little pixelated picture in spite of each picture file being over 10 MB.

Any help in viewing the pictures in full quality, editting the pictures, and converting to JPEG is appreciated.

It's Nikon's raw format. I never handle raw, but I think this is what you want:

The update you provided is for CS3, and the site states that the update will not work for CS2.

I will consider getting CS3.

In the meantime, cheaper suggestions for solving my problem are appreciated.

You can find updates for CS2, I'm sure. NEF isn't exactly new.
