Nelly Arcan, dead at 35

Doubt many Torontonians knew her. But in Quebec and in the French world she was famous for a few books she wrote. A former escort, mostly at the incall scene in Montreal (as well as a stint in Toronto very recently). Some of you who have been around long enough may recognize her. I was shocked when I read the news and knew Nelly well enough to be puzzled by her death. I am not sure what to say. Still shocked.

35 is old for an escort or an athlete. Some of them simply have too much difficulty adjusting to life as a civilian. That boxer Gaitti also commited suicide, at age 37. So sad.

Bullshit. Gatti was murdered. Whether that fact sees the light of day by Brazilian officials is another story. That's the risk you take when you travel abroad to the 3rd World. Either his girlfriend had him killed (or killed him herself), it was a robbery that resulted in murder, or Gatti got himself caught up into some shit (drugs, young girls, ticked some locals off, whatever).

On July 11, 2009, Gatti was found dead in a hotel in Ipojuca, Pernambuco, Brazil, where Gatti was on holiday with his Brazilian wife, Amanda Rodrigues, and their 10 month old son.[7][6][11] Gatti's widow was charged with first degree murder after the strap of her purse was found stained with blood. Gatti was to attend his sister's wedding the same day.[12] Rodrigues could not explain how she spent more than 10 hours in the hotel room without realizing Gatti was dead. Former boxing champion Acelino Freitas, who was a close friend of Gatti, claimed Gatti and Rodrigues were having problems and were about to separate.[13] On July 30, 2009, it was reported that the Brazilian police ruled Gatti's death as a suicide and his widow was released.[14][15] However, on July 31, 2009, it was announced that the Canadian government would be seeking more information from Brazilian authorities on Gatti's death. Gatti's family has also confirmed that there will be a second autopsy done in Quebec.[16] On August 1, a pathologist hired by the ex-boxing champ's family said Brazilian authorities overlooked bruises on Gatti's body in the initial autopsy. Montreal medical examiners will perform further toxicology tests in Canada and are also awaiting more information on the scene of death from investigators in Brazil. He was supposed to attend his sister's wedding on the same day but decided to commit suicide instead? His girlfriend is in the hotel room for 10 hours and doesn't notice that he's dead? Suicide... lol

Has the family accepted this result? Most insurance policies do not pay out for suicides and suicides are considered a mortal sin in some cultures.

I think these days insurance does pay out for suicide, it is considered death by mental illness. They often have an exclusion for the first year, to make sure that the person did not do it on purpose for the money (e.g. they were planning to kill themselves anyway, and insurance was a way to leave something for dependents). It seems reasonable to me.
