I know nothing about him. What's the feedback from all you NFL mavens on Rod Marinelli, defensive line coach for 10 years with TB Bucs? He's a disciplinarian but does he know how to build and game plan for a winning team? John Brophy for the Leafs was a disciplinarian but he couldn't coach for shit.

How do the folks in Superbowltown XL feel?

how Matt Millen can screw up coach after coach, draft after draft and still keep his job in a competitve league like the NFL is one of the greatest mysteries in the universe

ROD is THE MAN!!

the days of Mooch's soft practices and bullshit diva WR's is over!!...

this guy is basically the drill sargent from FULL METAL JACKET

check out the LIONS site www.mlive.com for the full scoop and his press conference -- really, from all I've read, this guy is the definition of a hard-ass...just what they need in detroit --

will probably go with a Pittsburg style of offense and install a modified Tampa-2 defense, relying on S. Rogers and Wilkinson for the push ( think Mcfarlane and Sapp in the good years at Tampa... )

Colin Cowerd on ESPN's The Herd LOVES this guy and said he can easily scare the Lions into 3 or 4 more wins -- just on motivation alone...

if they get a decent OC and maybe Donnie Henderson for DC -- look out !!

can you really be a hard ass and survive in today's NFL with players like "Me" Shawn Johnson and TO, with the exception of Cowher in Pittsburgh I cant think of anyone in the league that qualifies as a hard ass

on a side is not Colin Cowherd the funniest man on radio or what, this guy is freaking hilarious the stuff he comes up with and how he hates stats a different kind of sports announcer than your usual cut and very dry ones around.

worth a shot!

...not sure if the hard-ass coach thing will work to be honest, but it's clear the Mariucci way wasn't cutting it -- and I know it was probably killing Matt Millen to have a team with no balls and little personal accountability -- back to the days of "full pads and full hitting" through the week --

I've been a Lions fan all my life and I just get a vibe from this guy, that he's all about "no excuses" and "show me, don't tell me" -- he's from the Dungy tree ( Lovie Smith, Herm Edwards, etc...) so his way of relating to players should be something to keep an eye on --

Great ..Lions got a coach..

...now they need some players. Ths team is so over rated in key positions. The offensive line is poor. The quarterback sitiuation is totally screwed up,Joey Blueskies is an average QB at best. The defensive secondary, other than for Dre Bly, is average at best. The linebackers are injury prone and slow. The D line cannot pressure QB's enough...and those "weapon" receivers...China doll Rogers is a dopehead, who doesn't have any heart,Roy Williams is totally full of himself , even though he hasn't shown jack shit at the professional level, Mike Williams has shown little....Yep, tons more problems than any messiah coach can resolve. The chants for Millen's head should be starting again by week 6 next year..and hoepfully this time the Fords will listen, and fire him, and find someone who can really assess talent..

Buffalo and Detroit should share a team on opposite weekends thus freeing up a team for a real city with a population and a future.

Damn I hate defending Millen but I'm not sure I agree with ripping his drafts. Starting with Harrington, I still believe Millen is covering for the Ford's who forced that pick. They wanted a marquee QB to open the new place up.

Rogers was great his first couple of games before the 1st collar bone injury and looked to have developed a rapport with Harrington. Let's not forget he was the top receiver in that draft and a local boy. It made sense. Hindsight is always 20/20 like Bowie over Jordan.

Now, Roy Williams is a prima donna but I look at it this way, they would have ended up with biker boy Winslow Jr. They got Kevin Jones on top of that thanks to the swap with the Browns.

Finally, Mike Williams I think was a realization that Rogers had issues. I would have rather had defense and didn't care for that pick at all.

Looking at other picks, Shaun Rogers was a steal. Cory Redding and James Hall are solid picks. Boss Bailey, Teddy Lehman and Alex Lewis have all shown flashes of brilliance but need to stay on the field.

I'd also like to say Millen has done pretty well in free agency. Nobody believed in Bly. Big Daddy was on the cheap. Earl Holmes has been solid and even McQuarters was a decent value considering Drummond's and Bryant's regular injuries.

Has Millen been the greatest personnel finder as GM? Hell no but I think the roster has been improved since he got here. Recall that James Stewart and Charlie Batch were there before him. How does Millen keep his job? Same way the guy in Houston since how can no linemen been added to help Carr over the past two years.

Millen had no business getting an extension but to rip every draft he's had is probably excessive. Just IMHO.

Detroit has no business having an NFL team neither does Buffalo.

Detrroid can keep the Pistons and Wings but must also give up the Tigers.

Barffalo must also give up their hope of ever being a census metropolitan area.

So I guess Green Bay shouldn't have a team either. They're smaller than Buffalo.

That's the beauty of the NFL. Because of the revenue sharing, small markets can compete with big ones. Buffalo supports their team. They have good attendance. It's their mediocre management. They would get the same results in NY or NE or Chicago or wherever.

Buffalo shouldnt have an NFL team are you nuts!!!! have you been to that town or turned on their tv or sports radio, they are fanatical about that team, you tune into their sports radio in the middle of June and its Bills talk, their love for that team is on par for the Leafs in TO

Detroit and Buffalo both have fan bases that extend beyond the city limits of each team's host city. From other posts, it's obvious the Bills have a great fan base in the GTA as well as the rest of upstate NY.

As for the Lions, I'd dare say the boundaries of regional fans probably extends up to London, with a solid Windsor fan base, MI's upper peninsula and down to about Toledo in OH. Don't forget that playing in Pontiac all those years and the loss of the Browns for a while allowed Detroit to gain a decent following.

Green Bay is a great example of a small market team so I'll provide a contrasting point for debate. What about the inability of the NFL to keep a franchise in LA? How about the pathetic attendance and apathy in Phoenix? Pittsburgh isn't considered a big market in hockey or baseball. You can say it's because they've had crappy teams in all those situations but what about the lack of interest in the NJ Devils?

It's almost guaranteed Detroit or Buffalo will never lose an NFL franchise due to the points above and the fact that both owner's are part of the old guard. So I offer an alternative question ... What about TO???

Never happen. What's the upside for the league's other owners? Zero. The league is all about TV money and how it's split evenly. A Toronto market has no FOX outlet, no ABC or ESPN, no CBS, and therefore no ratings to drive up the price of what the league can charge for American TV rights. And that's the only issue that matters.

I knew what you meant but sometimes I can't resist being a smartass when given the opportunity.

I've got to agree that I don't think there's much financial upside for a team to move to Toronto. An expansion team (whenever that may be) may be a better possibility.
