NHL Schedule...

Anyone else find this year's schedule out of whack? I understand teams cant play an even amount of games evenly spaced out, but there are some weird things about the schedule this year.

1) Way too many days off between games. Toronto for instance, played yesterday, and wont play again until Saturday. Phoenix just had 8 days off in a row. Philadelphia earlier played 1 game in 10 days. This being the Olympic year, which removes 2 weeks in February, the schedule will be even more hectic!

2) East vs. West. Seems like they have taken on the baseball idea here. Where each team will play only one division from the other conference, which is a shame if you ask me. They made note of it the other day that Ottawa wont play Vancouver/Calgary again until 2008-09 season, unless of course they meet in the playoffs, thats just plain stupid.

3) The rivalry thing. I understand they want to push rivalries, and I have no problem there, but again the scheduling somewhat killed it, for some teams anyhow. Vancouver has already played Colorado 6 times, and that was by the end of November mind you. That's overkill, ideally should have been more spread out, but again it cant always be like that.

4) Back to back games --in the same city. To my understanding it only happens a few times on the schedule, but again this is taking a page out of the baseball book.

I dont know the point of this unneccessary rant, but I am incredibly bored!

This isn't so bad. It's like taking a page out of the NFL book, i.e. the bye week. It gives the teams a chance to unwind, allow some injuries to heal and come back a bit refreshed for the next grind. I'm sure the players appreciate it.

The Olympics also cause a great deal of games close together, back to backs, etc. There's a 3 week layoff in Feb because of them. I would think these slow periods like the Leafs are having would be a good chance to practise and heal some minor wounds.

Notice how the games the Leafs play on Monday nights are usually against crappy teams and games on Saturdays are usually against good teams? Looks like the Leafs have some pull in the scheduling...

OF COURSE THEY DO! (Whether anyone at the NHL admits it or not)

Coming from the biggest hockey market in Canada, on Saturday nights on Hockey Night In Canada, of course the Leafs are going to play some marquis teams...No Leaf/Blue Jackets games will be found on a Saturday. Which I like. I like sitting down and watching 2 entertaining and competitive hockey games on a Saturday night sometimes...I don't want to see the Thrashers or Mighty Ducks on there.
