Hello,

I tried several times to do a full scan using Norton and after several minutes my computer would reset itself. I was able to do a scan with Spybot (found nothing) without my computer resetting itself. After watching my Norton do the scan, I saw that when Norton was scanning a Temp Internet File\Content.IE5\swrk7T6s is when my problem would occur. Is there any recommended solution. Keep in mind I am not tech savvy so lay-man terms would be appreciated.

edit I tried scanning the above file individually and no problems. However, when I scan TEMP files (the file that holds Temp Internet file) I get the same reset problem.

Thanks in advance,
1Hand.

i deleted the file, did my scan and came back later to see I had the same problem, that Norton was closed from my computer resetting again.

To add, I only use Firefox as my browser.

Norton used to be the cat's a$$ of antivirus apps. Switch to McAfee. I did and most of my woes went away, including the memory hogging Norton apps that run in the background, and my virus detection improved enormously.

If it is XP try ...

To make sure it isn't a hard drive problem you can do the follow:

Right Click on Start -> Explore -> Right Click on the drive you are scaning (Likely "C") -> Selct Properties -> Tools -> Error checking -> Check now -> Select Automaticaly Fix and Scan for attempt recovery of bad sectors

It will ask if you want to run on next reboot - select yes and then shutdown and reboot you PC when you have time - this will take time depend on the size of your hard drive

I would have some other ideas but since you say you aren't a really computer guy this is a starting point.

When the disk check is done try the Norton thing again.

Do you also have Ad-Aware 2008 7.1.0.8?
Spybot S&D isn't enough, you should scan with both on Windows.

Years ago something like that happened to me while I used Norton, which is still a top rated AV even though it's a resource HOG....I've used Avast since Sep 2006 with NO problems and I hit the 'suspect' websites.

Years ago Norton kept being blocked by something like you are seeing. I ended up uninstalling Norton completely, it's a pain to do, then reinstalling Norton and all was OK.

Do you have the latest version of Firefox and what version of IE do you have? If you have IE5 better upgrade to IE6 or IE7.

yes I do have XP. I did this and my computer froze during phase 4 of the scan, so I had to hit the reset button. I did do a scan of the Temp file that was giving me problems and my computer did not reset this time. I'll try to do a full scan later.

on a side note before your suggestion, I tried to scan several individual files within my Temp file to see where the problem was coming from. When I scanned a bunch of files called plugtmp-(a number) I had the reset problem again. I tried to narrow this down further, but did not have any problems.

I have an older version of adware, I think i'll get the newer (free) version.
I am still considering getting Avast as well.
I have firefox 2.0.0.15, and I do not use IE.

Also, would system restore also be an option I should consider? I know the last time I did a successful full scan.

Thanks again.

Get the latest free version of Ad-Aware...that's what I use.
System restore is worth a try to.
You could also try the latest version of Opera browser, it's considered more secure and faster than FF.

spoke too soon. Did a scan just on the Temp files again, and still have the same problem.

Going to bed now, but will get newest Ad-aware and try Hunter's suggestion again later in the day.

For anti-virus both Norton and McAfee are lousy. Get NOD32, it's the best anti-virus on the market. If you're using Windows make sure Windows Defender is installed and automatically updates. It's really good and it's free. If you're browsing with IE make sure you have IE7 installed. Also make sure that your version of Windows is up to date.

Don't know if I would say ESET is the best (lots of studies show it is not) however its performance is better than all others I' ve tried. Great on older machines. Other than that, consider Avast and Kaspersky.

I would also perform a thorough Disk Check (you might have some small issues causing the resets or at least the resets have possibly caused some file issues).

good luck removing Norton, it seems to be worst than a virus the way it hooks into your system files.

I just switched to Avast Home Edition (free) from AVG 7.5. I tried AVG 8.0, but each machine I installed it on, had problems with it.

You should run CCleaner before any virus scan to clean up your system first.

I did a system restore, did a scan for the Temp file and still had the same problem.

I deleted all the files and sub folders within Temp (except for 1 file I couldn't delete. My brother did a search and it seemed harmless) and when I did a full scan everything seemed fine (as I checked it periodically), but when I came back to my computer it obviously reseted itself as my Norton was no longer running. (after at least an hour of scanning)

at stage 4/5 about 13% in my computer again resets itself.

any other solutions? I am also running Norton AV 2004. I have been renewing my subscription since.

Thanks again for any advice. It is greatly appreciated.

edit -> is it possible that this is a hardware issue?

If you can't run a complete AV scan, perhaps it's time to save the important stuff on your HDD and format it and start over fresh.

FWIW this is why I run Linux Ubuntu.
With Linux there is none of this BS you have to put up with when using Windows!
I just turn the PC on and run it with no fears at all.
Been doing it for a year now and never had to run any security & AV scans, CCleaner or Defrag for anything.
....;)

Norton provides a removal tool. However, it doesn't remove completely all the components all the time. Avoid the Rogers version of Norton at all costs, if you are using Rogers for Internet services.

If it reset itself while doing a disk check it is likely a hardware issue (It is the reason I said to try it.)

I remember when I last checked my computer that the scan was in the Program Files in my c: drive before it stopped. So I did a scan of just the files in Program Files, then later all folders/files that come alphabetical after Program Files without any problems.

Is this making any sense?

I really don't want to take this step.

thanks, I think I may have to look into that. Would this be a quick, and easy to identify the specific hardware issue (and hopefully somewhat cheap)?

Know what you mean.
However I used to format twice a year because Windows accumulates lots of crap just running it, in spite of doing all the other requried PM to keep it running smoothly.
After you format, it's like a brand new PC again till it accumulates crap all over again bogging it down, again.

When was the last time you formatted?

I would suggest that it maybe your hard drive starting to fail. I would back it up if there are things you are afraid of losing.

If you aren't computer "savvy" you might consider having someone who is look at it.

(Peckr's format thing might work. It is a big undertaking for a novice computer person and you may not have a the required media (Windows CDs, drivers,...)
