What the fuck is it with these judges? Poppies are a political statement? Its to remember !

It is not lost on me that our veterans fought so we can enjoy the freedoms the courts uphold'

Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston is blasting an order that he says prohibits workers in some courts from wearing poppies while on the clock.

He said the judges’ order earlier this week “was issued under the guise that the poppy is somehow a ‘political statement.’”

“This is disgusting,” he declared Thursday in a post on X.

“The poppy is not a political statement. It is a symbol of remembrance and respect for the fallen and those who served and continue to serve our country.”

Veterans made ultimate sacrifice for freedoms
Houston noted that poppies have been worn across the country since 1921 and said the judges who issued the order are “wrong” for doing so.

“We have courts and a democracy because of the courage of those who are willing to make the ultimate sacrifice in pursuit of, and in defence of, the very rights and freedoms we enjoy,” Houston went on.

“While I respect the independence of the judiciary, I respect veterans, the very people who made the ultimate sacrifice defending our country, our values and our democracy, more.”

I wonder what really happened?
Houston was careful here to not actually link to it.

My understanding is that courts prohibit any and all symbolisms to ensure neutrality.
So it is sort of a practice directive and a blanket ban on all symbols and they didn't want to make an exception for this, because then that would open doors for other adornments.
Of course the Sun had to politicize it.

What's interesting is Houston said something about specific individual courts, so it doesn't quite sound like it is a blanket thing, but some specific incident that came up he is being careful not to let the details be known.

He may actually have a legitimate complaint, but that he is doing this via twitter clout is pretty suspect.

This is what you think is a big issue?
First, I will say that it is ridiculous to ban wearing a poppy in court. It is a political statement, but more along the lines of remembering the sacrifice of veterans in the Great War and all subsequint conflicts since. It isn't a pro-war symbol, more of a pro-peace one.

Now, that being said, this feels like a "culture war" bullshit story. I mean, its got outraged politicians and the Sun chain of newspapers foaming at the mouth. They want Don Cherry to explode in rage and what not. While I honestly do not think the poppy would introduce a bias in the court, I can sort of understand where they are coming from. Say a person has been charged with assaulting a member of the armed forces. The poppy could be viewed as influening the court.

I guess the bottom line is that nobody should we any pins in on their robes no matter what they are. I would assume that includes the Canadian flag. And, to be honest, I think that makes sense.

Its definitely rage baiting for the culture war.

The right wing just seems to operate by finding these little issues they can rile the base with so they can ignore the real and big issues.
