Asked whether he was a bigger fan of Kobe Bryant or Michael Jordan, one the reigning MVP of the National Basketball Association and the other a retired superstar, the basketball-playing president said without hesitation: "Michael. I haven't seen anybody match up with Jordan yet."

On another subject ... Was watching " The Express " The story of Ernie Davis ... It was a era when black athletes had a cause and fought for it ... It's seems like this era of athlete don't take a polictical stance on anything .. They have do a lot of charities which is great but on main stream issue where
they can influence a generation of blacks they only want to sell you on the shoes they wear ..
This arguement is hogwash, they're not politicians, that jerk Jim Brown always gets on Tiger and MJ for this. These guys lead by example, they keep their nose clean and are the best at what they do. It's not up to athletes to raise other people's kids.

Michael is the greatest. Bar none. Kobe will always be second in my opinion in ter,s of shooting guards.

I don't remember one player being so dominant as Michael was but who the hell wins a title on their own? It's not tennis or golf.

Kobe was almost as dominant this year as Michael was in the past.

I guess Kobe didn't do enough to win the title this year.

Get real.

I agree. They should be role models though and it's not difficult to be cordial to the media and the general public but to get onto the political stage is something that could probably interest them at the end of their playing career, not during.

What does Role model have to do with my posts ... I am talking about subjects like 95 percent or more head coaches in NCAA Football are white and doesn't speak up about that ... Subjects like that ...
Your post had a role model feel to it, only now did you mention this other stuff, I only follow pro sports and blacks are coaching all over the three major leagues now.

Obama is is from the Chicago area and a Bulls fan obviously he is going to pick Jordan over Kobe. You won't be able to find one person in Chicago that thinks Kobe is better than MJ.

Coming from a neutral point of view, I would have to agree with Obama. Jordan could have won 8 championships in a row.

Mike started winning when he had one of the 50 greatest players of all time as his assistant (Pippen). Pippen (while a little overrated in IMHO) is better than anyone that Kobe had support him this year when he won it all. Gasol is good but not on Pippen's level... though strangely enough I feel Odom has the talent to be as good as Pippen but doesn't bring it every night.

But I agree that I'd still take a prime MJ over a prime Kobe

MJ, Tiger and the like already are influential in that they show that work hard and have a clean image pays big in the long run.

Not exactly a bad lesson.

If this was the 60's and 70's I might agree with Jim Brown. However I don't think you can put that on Woods and MJ. Like Don said, the way they portray themselves in public is pretty damn good to me.

Magic, Robertson, West and MJ -greatest guards of ALL time. Kobe isn't even in the top 50 all time players. MJ is on that top 50 list. A list compiled by people who do nothing but eat, sleep, watch, play, coach and report basketball.

For my money -there's even names like The Pearl who I would consider first in the 1 or 2 spot. Tiny Archibald, Cousy shit even Stockton -for his ability to make the shot but also to assist in the shot (he makes his team mates better).

Calloway, I don't believe it's an age thing. I think a lot of sports "fans" just don't know a damn thing about the sport they like. Most "fans" are total homers and have no knowledge outside their own teams. They have no idea about the games' history and the important players who set up the superstars in todays games. Kobe is good ... but c'mon ahead of MJ? I agree that's plain stupid.

Magictouch -you are 100% right -Kobe and LeBron fine. but not MJ.

Obviously the person who asked Obama that is one of two things. A. An idiot when it comes to basketball or B. Trying to bait Obama for some cheap controversy regarding or around basketball -I don't know, but the reporter is a moron.

The top 50 all-time list was compiled in 1996, before Kobe had even completed his first season in the NBA.

From what I've seen/read/heard about him, I don't like Kobe as a teammate or person, however, he is at least as good, if not better than anyone you listed except Michael Jordan - WAY better defender than Magic, West and Oscar. Better scorer than Magic. More of a winner than Oscar or The Logo. At worst, he's the #5 guard of all time, but an argument could be made that he is as high as #2.

The others you listed aren't even close, and I really like John Stockton. Different position, different era, different offensive philosophy/coach. Tiny Archibald was basically Allen Iverson (meaning a ball hog and playground-type player) before his injury and acceptance of a reduced role. Bob Cousy was a terrible shooter and average defender who had great teammates around him. The Pearl wasn't even the best player in his own backcourt - Walt "Clyde" Frazier was better than Earl Monroe.

I agree they are not politicians, and Jim Brown is a self-promoter.
However, they dont' need to raise other people's kids, but given that just a few decades ago, black athletes were the leaders of social change in America, I can understand why Brown feels that way.

I agree that athletes should lead by example. It is hard enough to win in any professional sports without an added burden. I don't think a guy like Tiger has to justify himself to Jim Brown. MJ has a lot of charities that he does.
