Surprisingly, and I am sure upsetting to the Democratic party, Obama spoke out this week AGAINST GAY MARRIAGE.
While he continues to 'waffle' in his feelings, he only believes in CIVIL UNIONS for gay couples.

I wonder if the gay lobby will get up in arms over this?

This is sure to upset the left leaning Democrats, and plays right into the hands of what Republicans have been saying all along!

I suspect OBAMA wants to be a little more like the Republicans...to help his dwindling hopes at election time!!!

:)

Going to be interesting times leading up to the election.

Provide link please

Also, doesn't matter if he's for or against it, it's not a federal issue, it probably should be, but it's not.

your right...its not an issue....but often times the left calls the right archaic and uneducated... by not agreeing to gay marriage....then OBAMA goes and pulls a stunt like this.

Must be devastating to the left!!!

This link? Seems to be dated Oct 2.

Obama cited his refusal to argue on behalf of the Defense of Marriage Act in court.

The president also hailed what he called a major shift toward more tolerance and acceptance of gays:

It's progress led not by Washington but by ordinary citizens, who are propelled not just by politics but by love and friendship and a sense of mutual regard.

It's playing out in legislatures like New York and courtrooms and in the ballot box.

But it's also happening around water coolers and at the Thanksgiving table and on Facebook and Twitter and at PTA meetings and potluck dinners and church socials and VFW Halls.

It happens when a father realizes he doesn't just love his daughter, but also her wife.

It happens when a soldier tells his unit that he's gay, and they tell him they knew it all along and they didn't care, because he was the toughest guy in the unit.

It happens when a video sparks a movement to let every single young person know they're not alone and things will get better.

It happens when people look past their ultimately minor differences to see themselves in the hopes and struggles of their fellow human beings. That's where change is happening.

Dooming the President for ever, I entirely agree with his position.

You could ask Ken: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ken_Mehlman

I disagree with the POTUS and the middle/right on this issue... equal protection under the law, it's as simple as that.... and no, separate but equal is separate but not equal.

Meanwhile, some in the audience at the most recent Republican presidential debate boo an openly gay soldier serving in the ME, and none of the candidates say a word.

Whoa, no one in the audience booed him when he said he was an gay soldier. When the booing occured was when he asked about "Don't Ask Don't Tell." You can certainly complain about the audience but at least get straight what occured.

They were booing a soldier who was gay and the question he was asking. Cain, to his credit, commented on one of the Sunday news shows that in hindsight he would have said something if he could. He said he didn't have the chance, which I don't really understand because he had a microphone right in front of him. As did they all.

Whether you are left or right...the gay voice is still ostracized in general society....

generally...one has to be gay...or be family with a gay person..or lost a close gay friend...

And lets be honest...that is a very small lobbying group in the big picture.

So it does not surprise me that the PREZ thinks like the vast majority of Americans.

That being..tolerating the 'gay' movement...but not going so far as to support marriage!

If he does not...then it just dirty politics...lying to get the vote from the right!!!

You can look at it that way and you may well be correct.

However, viewing it live it seemed to me (and I might add I'm not alone) that it was only when he started his question, not during the biographical section that a few people booed.
I don't agree with their rudeness, but it did seem to me that it was more the question than the person.

Perhaps it is because it is not my ox being gored, but I truly fail to see why Civil Unions are so horrible when they convey all the same (state) rights as a marriage.

If the difference is so minimal, then why oppose gays getting married?

Because a fair number of people feel that marriage has a specific meaning involving only a husband and wife. Which is an issue of society and culture more than an issue of law.

People seek societal approval of their union and you offer them cold law. Nice!
