I don't play but I've heard partypoker.com is good.
If you're a newbie, be careful or the only people winning lots of money will be your opponents.

I am pretty suspicious of online poker. How can they stop a couple of guys running the whole table/room since they can be chatting about their cards.

The are many poker sites out there, just google them or watch any of the sports channels and CITYTV.

http://www.pokerlistings.com/

The above is a listing so that you can check out many sites.

Almost all of them have a free area where you play and learn. The better ones have hints and advise.

CAUTION: when you move to the PAY area a different program starts running. You will find that it is easier to win on the free than on the pay.

The best way to play is to find a live game. Get a few buddies together and play for free that way you learn as you play in a "human" setting. Telling the reads is part of the game and is not a component of online play.

And surprisingly most of the software is developed and managed in Canada. So what you have (generally speaking) is American money behind the sites, Canadian management, the servers in the Caribbean and elsewhere, and technical support in South Africa and India.

Hard to catch and prosecute anyone, eh?

And there is nothing you can do about it since it is illegal to gamble on line in canada and most of the sites are based in the Cayman Islands or other similar countries.

It's actually easier to catch collusion online that at the casino. The reputable sites review the hand histories of the games and if the see players acting together they will freeze the accounts of the offending players. If you were victimized and lost money, your account will be credited for the money you lost.
These sites are too lucrative, so they take the integrity of the games very seriously.

I play lots on pokerstars and I like it.... I win and so I am not worried if people are trying to ripe me off as I win so if they are they don't do it well. The big difference is play money is not the same as real money it's not because of the software but because people play differently when it's not real.... the only thing I would not leave big money in your account cash out and u can't lose much if you don't leave your self exposed

I play at PlayTigerGaming.net. They have a free section, which is where I started. I would NOT bother playing at free reload tables (i.e. ones where you get extra play money if you lose) -- they just end up being big "all ins" for almost everyone every hand. Very unrealistic.

If you're looking for free, at least play in elimination tournaments.

I'm now playing for money at Tiger. I've risked $130, but am now up to $300 (i.e. up $170). I'd recommend playing tables that are 1/10th-1/20th what you're willing to lose, because sometimes your luck can run REAL bad (bad to the point where you'd swear the thing was fixed - but I can assure you it's not and that it all evens out at some point). So if you're willing to lose between $50-$100 max, play the $5 tables (where you can only bring $5 to the table). That way you'd have to be taken all-in 10 times in a row with bad luck to bust.

False - some is - most is not

So what you have (generally speaking) is American money behind the sites,

In many cases, Israelis 2nd position, and the UK in 3rd

Canadian management,

in poker -most is not Canadian

the servers in the Caribbean and elsewhere,

other than maybe one or two in Curacao, mainly in Costa rica and Gibralter for poker and also some in Canada on 2 reserves

and technical support in South Africa and India.

only 5% true - 95% in Costa rica

Hard to catch and prosecute anyone, eh?

- impossible in fact - but not necessary to worry, the poker sites are 99% reputable

And there is nothing you can do about it since it is illegal to gamble on line in canada and most of the sites are based in the Cayman Islands

there is not one site in the Caymans - not that i'm aware of
