Opening photo files

I recently received some files by email that are .docx files. I can't open them. It seems that this is a file made with the Microsoft Office 2007. I have an older version of Office. Does anyone know how I can open these files without buying the new version of Microsoft Office? Thanks.

docx files are not photo files... it is a text file which could contain photos, text... or a virus. It is the new version of the .doc file

You can open .docx files with older versions (XP, 2000).. there is an update on Microsoft's website to let you read them. You cannot edit them.

The file size is much smaller for Office 2007 files. There are new extensions for Word & Excel

If you can open them as MS Word documents, can't you use Save As to change the file type to .doc, or .rtf, or any other file types used by previous versions of Word, then edit them?
