If the threat is SP related you could contact detective Wendy Leaver of Sex Crimes at (416) 808-7446 and ask for advise.

Nothing related to sex but thanks for the fast reply hunter. We just need to explore all options.

lancslad, we did. You had any luck with the cops yourself? They don't offer much protection from what I can tell.

In a very dark place
Continous verbal threats are just as much assault as it would be with a physical weapon.

If the cops ignore document your dealings with them and try the TV media. The Silverman guy would be all over that.

What are they threatening with? Violence against you or your family or your business? How much money are we talking about? Have they been violent already?

Can you make tape recordings of the threats, or otherwise document them? That will help a lot. Otherwise it's your word against theirs.

Hire a reputable private investigation firm. Not sure if these guys are still in business but try King Reed and associates.

Contact your local "major crimes" unit if you are in Toronto, or call the OPP.

It takes guts to stand up to organized crime, but usually they are not as bad as they seem on TV.

ever thought about facial surgery... j/k

you'll have to translate that I'm afraid, but as you suspect the police is not very efficient in these situations. The only guys you have to see are the FBI (canadian eq.) or the crime unit specialized in organized crime. But here again they'll have to be interested in the organization that is bothering you.

Now my advice: make sure no one that knows you inside the criminal organization will be left out of jail. It's sad to hear but even if you are in your right, you often need to change of city after taking legal measures against mafias or such.
The only way not to be annoyed is to be part of another organized crime - but is has its costs on the other hand...

Biggest thing..... try to find out for sure it's legit.

There are poseurs and scammers out there who try to make you believe they are "connected". If they are real, the cops would probably be interested but a VERY dangerous situation for you.

Weigh your options, but see if it is real first.

So you guys think that police do more harm than good but rcmp can offer protection if they are interested in the people making the threats?

way out in left field
First of all, report it to the police. If nothing else at least they will have a report of who is involved should anything happen.

My question to you is: how did they find you to begin with? It is my understanding that they just don't walk down the street and pick people at random.

Another: Are we talking bikers? The italians? Jamaican? Drugs? Gambling debts? Loan Sharks?

Do you own a store where they are offerring protection?

As for them having connections to organized crime, are we talkin' street hoods/gang bangers?

You have to remember that most are simple street hoods that the upper echelon doesn't give a rat's ass about.

BTW: all this talk about the cops not caring is BS. I had a problem with someone threatening me and they were here in 45 minutes, confronted the individual and told him to back off or he'd be arrested. I never heard from the party again.

You have to remember: crooks want an easy score. If it ain't worth their trouble, they will move on.

Ok, sweet, but it was not a matter of organized crime.

it is not that cops don't care, it is just that regular police forces cannot offer the protection adapted to this kind of threats... hence the specialized services.

I sure hope that cops will hear you and transfer the matter to the competent people, but their goodwill must not prevent you from finding the safest solution for yourself. If all they can do is not enough, then go and find someone else...
