Just curious. Do you know or have heard of any people who left Canada or the U.S.? If yes, why did they leave and where did they go?

I know several folks who left for better economic opportunities - specifically in countries (mostly in asia) with a lower tax rate.

Interesting pattern so far. I have a co-worker who was born in Singapore, came here as a student and now has two little daughters that she is thinking of taking back to Singapore to live. She thinks quality of life is better in Singapore (not to mention the weather) and the girls would do better in school, family and career in a Chinese milieu.

I have several friends and one family member who have gone to work internationally. It's a global economy out there and sometimes the best job opportunities are overseas.

Some of them plan to eventually come back to Canada (and one has) and some of them settle overseas (one has a wife, kids, and citizenship overseas now). A couple in Europe, a couple in Asia.

I worked overseas for awhile, though, it was always my plan to return to Canada, and I did. I was overseas two years.

The son of one of my American friends graduated from University of Pennsylvania, couldn't find a job he liked in the U.S., took a job on a two year contract to teach ESL in China. That was 6 years ago. He has since learned Mandarin. He might marry and start a family over there.

I know a few who moved here with their families from Hong Kong and Taiwan, and ended up moving back again after a few years. They realized Canada wasn't a good place to make good money and not the lifestyle for the older generation.

Some came here just to get their Canadian citizenship and/or give birth to an "anchor baby".
I have never lived in a foreign country (have lived in 3 Canadian cities only). Wonder what it is like? Maybe I'll move to Australia when I retire.

We met several in the Bahamas and they had settled there to avoid Canadian taxes. They had made most of their money in Canada.

I wonder just how many Canadians live abroad? Must be a lot. For example, there are 600 million people living in Lebanon who claim Canadian citizenship (that figure rises to 900 million when there is a war there)

Several of my schoolmates and colleagues have left Canada for better employment opportunities in the USA. The lure was either to work in their specialized field (fewer opportunities in Canada), or simply because the American firm paid a significantly higher salary.

Two are in New York, two are in Los Angeles, one is in Boston, one in Philadelphia, one in Birmingham (Alabama), one in Washington DC . . . I can't recall the rest off the top of my head.

That is a shame. I use to play baseball with some doctors and nurses who went to the U.S. strictly for mercenary reasons. My boss and his brother attended a U.S. Ivy League university on hockey scholarships (wish there are more scholarships available in Canada), worked a bit in the U.S. but returned to Canada.

Mark Boyle, Rob Kitchin published a paper in 2011 that said about 8% (2.8 million people) of the Canadian Population lived outside of Canada.

As personal wealth increased the % goes way up.

Several associations and clubs exists for Canadian Expats. :)
