While l generally like Sony products,I don't care for their arrogence or whatever you want to call it, I am happy when I read styff like this

Viacom-owned studio opts for Toshiba's "affordable" HD-DVD technology, dumping Sony's Blu-ray discs

Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Animation have dropped support for Sony’s Blu-ray next generation DVD format in a shock move that will see the two studios exclusively use Toshiba’s rival HD-DVD system.

It's still bad for consumers. For people with kids for example, the Disney stuff will come out on Blu-Ray but Dreamworks (Shrek etc) will be on HD DVD.

Out of spite I'm still holding out from buying either player. There's a new Samsung player coming out that will supposedly play both formats. (LG already has a dual format player on market.) But the dual format players aren't without their faults and for the price, you can almost buy one of each player anyway. I also read somewhere that Sony is aiming to have a new $300 Blu-Ray player on market for Xmas.

You'd think the manufacturers would learn and standardize this kind of stuff. In any case, I'm rather hoping that Blu-ray wins because I want to see it as the new data storage standard for computers. (Blu-ray has higher storage capacities than HD DVD.)

That's the whole point, they can't agree. Each wants to win the whole pie rather than share it.

Same here. I like Samsung and LG a lot more than Sony, but buying a dual player simply means I'm paying both camps royalty fees on the player so I might have to live without one for quite some time. :mad:

Glad to see I'm not the only person that dislikes Sony.
Unlike other twats on here that love them, one name comes to mind.

I'll just settle for neither technologies and enjoy watching regular DVDs, a far cry from my VCR.

Sony tried pulling this stunt with Beta, the better technology but lost to VHS. They also tried it with their mini-discs, but Apple romped EVERYONE with their flash based mp3 player device, aka, the iPOD. :)

It's a ping pong game, a few months ago all the news was that Blu-Ray was going to win the war because Blockbuster is only stocking Blu-Ray now. Still too early for me to blow $1k on a potentially obsolete technology. Too bad, if not for the battle high-def movies would be a lot more widespread.

sad that basically the cheapest way to get a plyer for either is to buy a video game system, either a PS3 with the built in bluray player or pay the extra $200 for the HD DVD drive for the XBOX 360, I am going to wait till they figure it all out before making any purchase

BluRay 25GB = $25 @ BestBuy -->40x25 = $1000 = 1TB

ExtHDD 1TB = $399 @ BestBuy = I`d rather buy a 1TB HDD which I did https://terb.cc/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=162876
I don`t disagree that a hard drive is much cheaper per unit than Blu-Ray. But there are legitimate needs to portable storage and a hard drive is not always practical that way. Also, it`s sometimes advantageous to store stuff off your hard drive for either legal or business continuity purposes.

For these reasons I`d still like to see Blu-Ray win the format war.

On a different point the Blockbuster I go to has Blu-Ray and HD DVD available for rent so there`s no advantage to either format there.
