Paying for It, "a comic strip memoir about being a john", is a 2011 graphic novel by Canadian cartoonist Chester Brown. A combination of memoir and polemic, the book explores Brown's decision to give up on romantic love and to take up the life of a "john" by frequenting sex workers. The book, published by Drawn & Quarterly, was controversial, and a bestseller.

The comic strip mentions TERB. There is now a film adaptation too.

Wasn't Chester Brown a TERB member?

Just want to say the comic was excellent, and painted both Johns and escorts in a very humane light-- The debates the author had with his friends, and the points raised in the appendices were gold. He also didn't shy away from some of his more questionable decisions. TERB also features prominently in the comic. Another thing it inadvertently covers is prostitution during the rise of the internet, which was interesting in its own right.

Would recommend it as a read for both customers and providers, or for people who are curious about sexwork or seeing sex workers.

Strong recommend.

Dunno but I saw him being interviewed when the book came out and he looked fuckin creepy. Then I found out he was dating Sook Yin Lee. Famously in the movie "short bus" with some nice sex scenes. So good for him.

Actually she's a character in the comic and the collapse of their monogamous sexual and romantic relationship is what sets him down the path of paid sex. Their situation was 'complicated' (in a way that a lot of people wouldn't have tolerated), but they remained friends and collaborators.

She's still active in the same lane she's always been in, AFAIK. (Though time and culture has moved on, for good or ill.)

I saw her play as part of a show at the Silver Dollar years back.

Someone once mentioned that it's fairly obvious that it's only Asian women that Brown saw.
