Why don't they use a stop clock in soccer? Is it not better to know how much time is left in the game? The world cup is not bad, pretty hard to convert a diehard hockey fan though.

That would completely ruin the game. Next you would have stops for commercials etc etc. The beauty of soccer is its simplicity that makes it real.

Soccer is played by a team, without much interference by the manager or trainer during the game. Although they have now made substitutions much more prevalent than in the old days, when it was only allowed for serious injuries.

Wow, I just don't get. I don't want stoppages in play, I just wnt to know how much time is left in the game. How would that ruin soccer?
BTW great comeback for Australia, the winning goal was a beauty.

Then I don't quite understand your problem. There is a clock on the tV screen showing real time, and you pretty much know how much injury time is going to be added. It is usually in the order of 2 mins.

One of the great things about soccer/football is that there is a sense of fair play (the overacting on the fouls aside) that sets it apart from most North american professional sports. This fair play shows itself with the opposing team kicking the ball out of play if one of their opponents is legitimately hurt.

The other thing I like about extra time is that it always seems to work out so that the team behind on the scoreboard always seems to get once last chance, that is to say the whistle is rarely blown while the team who is losing has posession of the ball with a legitimate scoring attempt.

the people who run football seem to remember that above all this is a game.
