Enough with the constant grumbling about Family Day! An extra holiday is exactly what most people need, yet I hear the constant bitching over loss revenues, etc.

http://www.thestar.com/news/ontario/article/587659

I've got an idea. Let's just eliminate all holidays in Ontario. Perhaps we can increase the work week to a standard 60 hours as well.

Why is it people in Europe can enjoy more holidays and the sky doesn't fall in at the same time?

Maybe there are too many Puritanical assholes in this province!

I love holidays, but as a small business owner, paying all of my staff to stay home isn't helpful these days. In my case, it's almost $5000 a day for payroll.

I love it when the government takes all the accolades for adding a holiday. It's guys like me that foot the bill for it... If they think it's such a great idea, let them pay for it.

Where I worked they simply dropped the "optional" civic holiday we used to get in the summer and switched to this february "family day" so that we have the same number of vacation days as before.

I would honestly rather have the day in the summer, you can do more with a summer holiday.

What I want to know is how is it Europe has a higher standard of living: work standards, way more vacations days than we do, better medicine etc and yet it was war torn and ravaged only 70 yrs ago? Didn't we go over there to make it better? Seems like we did too good a job since our standard of living doesn't compare to Western Europe nowadays...

The money that would normally be spent on Family Day will just be spent on another day. The myth that business is lost is just that - a myth.

Consider what happened when Ontario introduced wide-open Sunday shopping. Did people actually go out and spend more? Generally, no. They just spread their shopping dollar over 7 days instead of 6. Just because you were now given the opportunity of buying more groceries on Sunday didn't mean you actually increased your grocery budget by 14%.

And so it is with Family Day. What was destined to be spent on that day either got spent before, or will be spent after.

You pay people to stay home? Can I work for you?

It's also Presidents Day in the US, so it's not like a lot of real companies could get much done anyways ;)

What people seem to forget about Canada is that we have a huge country with a small population. That's less people to pay for roads, sewers, and all the other modern conveniences we take for granted. Sure Europe has a better standard of living, they have more people per square kilometer to pay for that stuff so there is more money left over for better health care, longer vacations, etc, etc. I'd still rather live here though.
