So I got a ticket (my first ever) for a school safety zone. It was bedtime! WTF.
I was going under 60 in a school safety zone and now I'm out $100+ that's the normal speed limit.
I can understand when kids are around but seriously that is crazy. No one is out walking at that hour. Cash grab. Why can't they use time blocks to make it acceptable. Grrrrrr!

Welcome to the club. Do not think of it as a safety issue, think of it as a way for the city to raise revenue without increasing property taxes. They do not care that it makes no sense to go 50km/h on an empty non-residential road. The whole idea of fixed speed limit regardless of road condition and traffic is ridiculous.

Pay the tax and be happy. They're putting those goddamned things everywhere. Even the secondary and tertiary intersections are being fitted with cameras. That's the problem: you allow them a camera for "safety" in a legitimate spot, they turn around and put them everywhere. That's why I was always against them. Not because I'm against safety, but because once you give them a green light to install them they never stop(installing them).

Sometimes there are school events like Parent-Teacher interview night, graduation shit, etc... that happen well after school hours.

It’s the local community that puts pressure on politicians and police to put these in place.
Cheaper than having a cop sitting there.

I agree with you on this. There are lots of changes that could be made to traffic laws to improve peoples' lives and help the environment. For example, rather than sitting at a red light late at night when there are no other cars around is a waste. Why not be allowed to treat it as a stop sign, stop, look both ways, and if nothing coming, proceed through. Why won't this happen? 1) There are too many bad drivers around who would fuck it up and cause an accident. 2) It would be too difficult to teach people the new rules. So we're stuck with the ridiculous laws we have.

And kids use school playgrounds after hours. Hopefully not at 11 PM in the winter though.

If people think the speed limits should be dependent on the time of day then they should lobby for it. Meanwhile I think that most voters are happy to minimize their tax increases by dinging people who can't follow instructions.

I think they should do this in every school zone. It makes people more aware by drawing attention to the change in speed required.

And to be honest, how does it improve safety? If you get pulled over by a cop, there are studies that show people are much more likely to drive the speed limit and follow the rules afterwards. Here, you get a fucking ticket and grumble. It is a cash grab, pure and simple. Remember when they had them in vans on the highway? What a scam.

My understanding is that they also move the cameras from time to time....

Also, won't your employer get pissed at you at some point? I mean, I drive over the limit all the time, but my boss would never get that bill...Stay safe!

It's totally normal. Without your money the government couldn't give 600 million loan to Ukraine. I'm sure they will pay it back!

Ive always thought school safety zone speed limit only applies between 8am-5pm or when the amber lights are flashing?

Some of the speed cameras are portable and are being moved around for maximum effect.

The photo radar cameras don’t have a bed time and they don’t get turned off. Speed limits don’t only apply at certain times.
There are warning signs where those cameras are so you get warned you are coming up to one.
Try slowing down instead of bitching about the ticket.

Do you have a smartphone? Download the WAZE app. It lists all the photo radar and red light cameras in the city. Plus, users can flag Cops if they're stopped anywhere as they have the potential to be operating radar.

As for speed limits, if they were truly interested in safety, they'd adopt a policy used in US states. They have two speed limits in school zones and they're punctuated by flashing amber lights during school hours. Fines are also doubled when lights are flashing. In other words, during school hours, the speed is reduced and the fines are doubled. It also means that in off school hours and summer months, speed limits aren't reduced.

Photo radar is a speed tax. The fine goes to the owner of the vehicle (who might not even have been driving), there's no points and it doesn't affect your insurance rates.
