Ottawa base.
I have a love hate stories with pigeons.
Two years ago at my old apartment I had a couple nesting and I had babies on my balcony...it was cute
About two months ago a pigeon decided to literally flew into me.
I had a massive bruise on my hip for two weeks

Pigeons are diseased flying rats. I went to school with a kid that told me his uncle would catch them and eat them. I do not know if the pigeons in Italy are any cleaner than the ones in Canada.

Aren't they the cutest things?

Not cute at all! To me they are nothing but a " rat that have wings" ! If it was legal to kill them I would kill or poison them all!

From a distance I guess they could seem cute. But up close they are in fact like rats. They eat anything Cary disease. And watch out for bird mites. Look it up on Internet. If u get bird mites you're big time fucked.

Actually, I believe it is legal to kill pigeons. For some reason seagulls are taboo. I read awhile ago, there is some secret force that kill pigeons in the city legally, although kept hush hush to keep the bleeding hearts at bay. Either way, I believe there should be a cull of both pigeons and seagulls in the city. They spread e-coli, etc. What really irks me is people who feed them. I lived in Hamilton in a high rise, I could never use my balcony as it was always covered in bird shit. Also, the bird shit is not good for your paint on your car. I have heard pigeon is good eating!

Every species has a purpose on this earth.
If you mean that every species has evolved to fit a particular ecological niche, then I agree with you. Some of those niches, however are not particularly valuable to humanity. The "purpose" of a liver fluke, for example, is not exactly a noble one.

This would be true if we let nature take its course in which case the pigeon (and raccoon and seagulls and other vermins) population would be controlled by the laws of nature.
I guess by "vermin" you mean any wild animal that can live with humans. I notice that the "anything" they eat seems most often to be discarded human food. They are plentiful precisely because they are filling an ecological niche.

Why do you automatically assume that every other species has to be valuable to humans? Other species lived for millions of years before humans were ever present. This is the faulty thinking of humans.............that other species should only be here to serve us!
