I need to get a document (confirming my address, education, and employment) notarized with seal.

Thanks in advance for recommendations.

I had to get something notarized in Toronto once. Had to take it to a lawyer and the bastard charged me - what I thought was alot.

In New York a notary can't charge for notarizing something. If you go into any bank there are usually a couple of the employees will be notaries and the service is always free.

The only time you get charged is if a notary has to travel to get to you, then they get mileage and travel time.

ask your next SP, she will be happy to do it. You should probably tip her a bit.

IIRC, all lawyers in Ontario are Notaries. Other notaries are relatively few, and will still charge for the service.

Many law firms have some junior lawyer who will notarize something on a walk-in basis for an annoyance fee (i.e. a fee lower than the value of their time), maybe $20 or $40. Don't forget to have all your documents ready (i.e your own identification).

Usually, though, a notary can only notarize what they can vouch for: that it was you who signed the document, for example. A notary couldn't normally vouch for your academic transcript, although your institution should be able to provide a certified copy.

I get stuff notarized all the time for 20 bucks at a Lawyer's office in Bloor West Village.

20 bucks, takes him 1 minute for me to swear it's true, etc.

He's a good guy.

Used to be that you could go to City Hall and get it done for 10 bucks. I used to use the services of a Commissioner of Oathes at Mississauga, Markham, or Burlington.

Last time I tried City Hall and they would only do it if it was for City of Toronto Business. Tried old City Hall and the JP refused to do it.

Found the lawyer in my area via the yellow pages.

I clicked on OddSox's link above. There are plenty of places that will notarize for under $20.
