Plasterer - Anybody know a good plasterer

I am doing some renos on my place.

I pretty much do everything myself, electrical, plumbing, framing, drywall, tiles, etc, etc.

But,

I live in an old house and it is all originally plaster and I much prefer plaster over drywall since I think it looks better and is far more durable.

But I have never plastered (properly) anything in my life and I don't want to "learn" on my own place. (I have repaired a ton of plaster mind you, but that's usually with drywall compound and mesh and it works great.)

I have a couple of rooms ripped out and I would like to have them plastered as opposed to drywalled.

Does anyone know of a good plasterer.

I could put up the gypsum board, and then he could plaster it.

I am looking for perfection, not just some guy with a trowel who thinks he is a plasterer.

I had occassion to see some excellent plaster work done recently but it was in hamilton.

I am in need of a plasterer in Toronto.

I have gutted my kitchen down to the brick, framed with steel stud, done 95% of the wiring, and plumbing rough ins.

I just need to run an exhaust duct (the vent is in), and insulate and I am ready for plaster.

I was originally planning to drywall, but I think I would prefer plaster the more I think about it.

I figured I could board it myself, and have a pro do the rough and white coats.

I also have pulled down my living room ceiling which was heavy heavy stucco and about 1.5" thick at that in several layers over the years.

I would need the ceiling done too (I have rewired that room too) and the coving and a few repairs to the existing wall plaster (or I could do that, I have done tons of plaster repairs that you can never see.)

As far as corian goes, sorry Winston, but the plan is for granite counters and limestone flooring. But thanks anyway.

I certainly don't expect anyone to work for peanuts. I am willing to pay either lump sum, or time and materials, I don't care upon completion of the job.

But I expect excellent quality and I expect no grief. I am willing to pay for that. I always figure if I am hiring someone, they should be able to do a better job than me. Not to toot my own horn, but I do a good job when i work at the reno stuff. Just never done a full plaster job before.

Even when I watch Holmes on Homes, I find error in some of the stuff he does. Like for example the recent episode where some couple had water ponding on their flat roof, and he built a new roof on top of the old roof using 2 x 4 strapping and new plywood. I would not have done that. I would have completely ripped off the existing wood roof and reprofiled the existing joists, allowed for an air gap, then put down the new plywood. Watching that episode I wasn't quite sure that what he did was so great.

Also, there was another H on H episode where the couple had a balcony that leaked water into their garage. Holmes goes in there with saws a blazing and at the end of the day he still had water ponding on that flat roof (the water was hung up on the joints of the asphalt wearing surface) The reason was that his scupper drains were on the sides of the roof and he ran his asphalt top course perpendicular to the direction that the water had to drain. He should have ran them paralell and then there would be no joints for the water to get hung up on.

Still, Holmes has the totally RIGHT attitude and the right work ethic. I think sometimes he just needs to seek out a little advice.

Now, that guy who does Real Renos, - Jim, that guy never stops complaining. Every time I watch that show, he's crying a river about some architect, or some homeowner, or this or that.

Winston, what would a piece of Corian 4'x7' cost these days?
Any colour, no bullnose.
I realize that you would have to join two pieces.

Neil is great.

But you hit the nail right on the head. Jim isn't good for too much as far as I can ever tell. Other than complaining about losing money and blaming someone else. He's good at that.

Just a point of clarification....

I am looking for a plasterer, not a drywaller.

I can tape drywall with the best of them, that's not what I am looking for.

Order of operations:

Gyp Rock (called blue boards sometimes)

Mud coat

White coat.

Real plaster.

At one time, all houses were plaster, now they are pretty much drywall. Drywall is ok but it's definitely not plaster. You can't scrape plaster with a suitcase or a bag of groceries like you can drywall.

I know that Granite is pourous, and has to be sealed.

Olive oil, butter, red wine will all stain.

You need to seal it and it you spill any of the above, you need to wipe it up, you can't let it sit.

The problem with the plastic stuff is that it looks fake.

Nothing beats the look of granite.

Concrete - forget it.

Stainless - too institutional looking.

When I picture Corian, I picture all the countertops at every McDonalds in the world. If they could make it indistiguishable from Granite, then they would have something. I can appreciate its indestructability, but the look......

It need to look 100% identical to granite.

4X7 in select series, no taxes, backsplash or edge profile is about 1800 dollars.

I can give you a more accurate quote based on specific colour, work etc if you need.

One of my customers wants to recreate an outdoor pool table that he saw, and he asked me what he should make the playing surface out of. I first thought of water proofing MDF, but it would dimple if someone droped a ball on it. Then I came up with Corian, so the colour or quality isn't important, just the size.

You quoted on the select series, is that a high quality?

BTW, how many Corian guys are there in T/O, like 3? We probably have met before because I have used Corian a bunch of times over the years. (General Contractor)

I'm with James on the whole Corian "look" thing, but I must say that the Zodiac stuff looks pretty good.

Select series has the same quality/durability/warranty as the rest of the colours. The only difference is the colours. You might think of Beach Glass for your table. Slight green tinge, unitoned.

I am actually with Willis Supply, so I doubt that we have met. You probably have delt with Viscotech, Uniform, SCS, Contours etc.

What is Beach Glass?

I do actually deal with Uniform quite a bit for my laminates

Seagrass would also be a good pick for a pool table.

Next time you are in Uniform, say hello to Mary Jo, and take her a black coffee and a bagel with cream cheeze.

If you have used them before as a contractor, she can probably give you a better price than I can as a retailer.
