A friend is sending a DVD with a home movie clip in PAL format from the UK. Do you know if I can play this on my computer with DIVX or mediaplayer? Is there a utility to convert it to North American standard?

Ultimately, I would like to play it on my home theatre DVD player.

Thanks for your help.

A home movie is not likely region coded,so region free player won't help you here, but as you say its in PAL format,,, many DVD players have an option to switch from ntsc format to pal, have a look in the set up menu or the manual.

Thanks, I'll check that out.

Anywhere there's a Strip Joint
Wait until you get the DVD, then take it to the store and try it before you buy.

Just a quick caveat there - yes, it WILL play happily in PAL format on a PC, but make sure he sends you a DVD that's set to region 0 (nearly all home authored disks are) otherwise you'll run up against problems with the region code, as they are in a different region to us.

This is copied from an old thread on TERB. I don't know who wrote it originally.

Go to the Control Panel. Open System. Click the Device Manager in the Hardware tab. Open the + for DVD/CD-ROM drives. Right click on the proper drive, and select Properties. Go to the Dvd Region tab and change the Country, which will change the region.

Note that this can be only be done a specified number of times. The number of remaining times that the Region can be changed will be shown in the Caution notes.

Be very careful when doing this. On my WinXP Pro, I am only allowed five region changes. Changing from NTSC to PAL and back counts as two; three back/forth changes wasn't possible. That's why I had to buy a new DVDR/W.
