Pokémon Go comes directly—directly—from the intelligence community

And it’s not like Pokémon Go itself doesn’t already have a direct(-ish) line to the CIA. After all, Pokémon Go was created by Niantic, which was formed by John Hanke.

Now, Hanke also just so happened to help found Keyhole. What does Keyhole do, you ask? I’d tell you to go to Keyhole’s website—but you can’t. It just takes you straight to Google Earth. That’s because Keyhole was acquired by Google back in 2004.

Before that, though, Keyhole received funding from a firm called In-Q-Tel, a government-controlled venture capital firm that invests in companies that will help beef up Big Brother’s tool belt. What’s more, the funds In-Q-Tel gave Keyhole mostly came from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), whose primary mission is “collecting, analyzing, and distributing geospatial intelligence.”

SOFT ROBOTS THAT can grasp delicate objects, computer algorithms designed to spot an “insider threat,” and artificial intelligence that will sift through large data sets — these are just a few of the technologies being pursued by companies with investment from In-Q-Tel, the CIA’s venture capital firm, according to a document obtained by The Intercept.

Yet among the 38 previously undisclosed companies receiving In-Q-Tel funding, the research focus that stands out is social media mining and surveillance; the portfolio document lists several tech companies pursuing work in this area, including Dataminr, Geofeedia, PATHAR, and TransVoyant.

On 29 September 1999, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) was treated to something different. In many of the nation’s leading newspapers and television news programs a story line had appeared that complimented the Agency for its creativity and openness. The media was drawn to a small corporation in Washington, DC that had just unveiled its existence and the hiring of its first CEO, Gilman Louie. Mr. Louie described the Corporation, called In-Q-It, as having been formed "...to ensure that the CIA remains at the cutting edge of information technology advances and capabilities." 1 With that statement the Agency launched a new era in how it obtains cutting edge technologies. In early January 2000, the name of the corporation was changed to In-Q-Tel.

The origins of the concept that has become In-Q-Tel are traceable to Dr. Ruth David, a former CIA Deputy Director for Science and Technology. She and her Deputy, Joanne Isham, were the first senior Agency officials to understand that the information revolution required the CIA to forge new partnerships with the private sector and design a proposal for radical change. The timing of the proposal was fortuitous. The Director of Central Intelligence (DCI), George Tenet, had just launched his Strategic Direction initiative that included technology as one of its areas for review. The study made a direct link between the Agency’s future technology investments and improving its information gathering and analysis capabilities.

By the summer of 1998, the Agency had assembled a few senior Agency staff employees with an entrepreneurial bent and empowered them to take Dr. David’s original concept and flesh it out. Aided by a consulting group and a law firm, they devoted the next four months to making the rounds in Silicon Valley and elsewhere, putting the concept through the wringer. Much of the time was spent listening. Many they met with were often critical of one aspect or another of the concept. But, whether they were venture capitalists, Chief Executive Officers (CEO), Chief Technical Officers (CTO) or congressmen and staffers, they all eagerly immersed themselves in spirited debates that enriched the Agency team and drove the concept in new directions.

By the end of 1998, the Agency team reached a point at which the concept seemed about right. Though it had changed considerably from that which had been proposed initially by Dr. David, it remained true to its core principles. It was time to hand the product of the Agency’s work over to someone in the private sector with the experience and passion necessary to start the Corporation. To the delight of the DCI and the Agency team, Mr. Norman Augustine, a former CEO of Lockheed-Martin and four-time recipient of the Department of Defense’s highest civilian award, the Distinguished Service Medal, accepted the challenge. By February 1999, the Corporation was established as a legal entity, and in March it received its first contract from the Agency. In-Q-Tel was in business, charged with accessing information technology (IT) expertise and technology wherever it exists and bringing it to bear on the information management challenges facing the Agency.

Once upon a time a company that funded a company that was acquired by Google after being founded by a guy who also worked on this game, partnered with an agency that might maybe be related to the CIA.

In CM's books that makes it "directly—directly—from the intelligence community".

Your can't make this stuff you folks, if he hadn't literally just said that right in this thread you would have thought I was joking.

canada-man, you are like the biggest conspiracy theorist out there.

pokemon go is awesome, it gets the kids active, and it's a nostalgic blast to our childhoods that we all love. it's also pretty self-explanatory/user-friendly... sometimes glitchy, but that may be fixed when we get some more servers in canada when they actually release it here.
it's not a conspiracy theory when there is evidence.

Smirk if you want but a friend of mine knew a girl who had a friend that got her nails done by a Korean that had a brother that over heard this guy talking about his ex-girlfriend's room mate that once dated a guy that travelled through Washington - too many coincidences for this not to be totally true.

Of course Homeland is going to spend billions on these obscure spy programs rather than log onto Facebook which besides the latest face recognition software has millions of people putting all their most private details along with photos on the internet for free.

I took my first gym today. This really makes the morning commute fun. With incense on I caught close to 40 pokemon today on my 3km walk to work. I purposely woke up an hour early to play this on the way to work. Sometimes you'd look up from the phone screen and see another player and they will smile at you. The first ever non-antisocial video game it seems unless you are one of those people who play in their cars...

In my neighborhood kids are going out again. I purposely go out near midnight to avoid the kiddies but there are always a group of 4-5 huddled near a gym. In the city or uni campuses you will see crowds of them around a lured pokestop. Its only been a few days mind you and this game is already used more than twitter.

Armed robbers used the game Pokémon Go to lure victims to an isolated trap in Missouri, police reported on Sunday.

At about 2am in O’Fallon, Missouri, officers responded to a robbery report that led them to four people, all local residents aged 16 to 18, in a black BMW in a CVS parking lot. The occupants tried to discard a handgun out of the car when an officer approached, said Sgt Bill Stringer. The officer then identified the four people as suspects of similar armed robberies described in St Louis and St Charles counties.

The adult suspects were charged with first degree robbery, a felony, and had bond set at $100,000 cash, Stringer said.

Stringer added that police believe the suspects used the phone app, which directs users to capture imaginary creatures superimposed onto the real world, to tempt players into secluded areas where they could be easily robbed. At a certain level in the game, he noted, players can congregate at local landmarks to join teams and battle.

“Using the geolocation feature,” Stringer said, “the robbers were able to anticipate the location and level of seclusion of unwitting victims.”

In a separate statement, a department spokesperson added: “you can add a beacon to a pokestop to lure more players. Apparently they were using the app to locate [people] standing around in the middle of a parking lot or whatever other location they were in.”

A statement from police quoted from a news article to explain the allure of the game: “Seeing a Pikachu on the sidewalk in front of you is a fan’s digital dream come true.”

This is great information CM, however what is your opinion of the game? Do you like it and would you play it?

When it got released I thought it was silly. But after hearing all this hype like your CIA info, hackers, injuries, people going nutz, misuse by criminals and seeing people on the street playing makes it exciting to try at least and I would definitely download the app and try it out, even though I dont think I can get into it. I dont really care about the mentioned stuff since it will not change my life one bit for the negative.

Just curious to read your thoughts on the actual game and opinions.

I actually just heard this story on the radio about the CIA link lol.

The guy explained it in simpler terms. Basically say if you wanted to track a certain person or survey them, you could plant a Pokemon say in their house or close by and then people (I THINK, don't quote me on this, wasn't listening fully) would come and take a picture near that person and gather information + a clear photo of someone? Something along these lines, I wasn't really paying attention but it definitely sounded like a closer version to brave new world to me.

Wow; a mind blowing post All sorts of misogynistic 'insults' and then complaining that people sometimes call you names.

Who gives a fcuk?

(BTW, I don't know what value such a game would have with the CIA. They have bigger fish to fry but maybe could use it as one of their tools in some kind of targeted investigation. The CIA definitely has had media assets for decades.)

That makes sense but it's no sinister conspiracy. It's just another possible tool in the arsenal of intelligence gathering.
