Police can use pot between shifts once it's legalized but must be 'fit for duty'

Police departments across Canada are in the process of adding cannabis to their official policies surrounding alcohol and drug use by off-duty officers.

And while each police agency will have its own specific HR policy, Vancouver Police spokesperson Const. Jason Doucette told Daily Hive that VPD officers will receive online training through the Canadian Police Knowledge Network (CPKN).

It’s much the same story for RCMP officers across the country as well.

“The RCMP is finalizing its policy surrounding the use of cannabis by its employees,” said RCMP spokesperson Sgt. Tania Vaughan. “This policy will be established to maintain public safety and a safe workplace.”

Once finalized, she said, the policy will provide direction to employees and their supervisors surrounding work standards on the non-medicinal use of cannabis.

Vaughan told Daily Hive that all RCMP officers must be “fit for duty when reporting for work, which includes not being impaired by alcohol or any other type of drug.”

She added that the RCMP will continue to review the scientific research and legislation as it evolves and will update the policy as required.

Doucette said training around the VPD’s impairment at the workplace policy will also contain information on the latest research on the use of cannabis.

“We want to provide our officers with the latest information so they can make an informed decision when it comes to cannabis use and being fit for duty,” he said.

However, no time period between when an off-duty officer can use cannabis in relation to the start of their next shift attached to the policy.

“We don’t have a specific time limit on alcohol or prescription drug use and we will not be implementing one for cannabis,” said Doucette. “Our officers will be provided with information surrounding cannabis use and potency etc., and it will be their responsibility to ensure they show up fit for duty.”

Here's the scenario....you are the Sgt that makes sure the cops who show up for work are in shape to do it. A cop shows up drunk, or "HBD" has been drinking, the effects are obvious, smell, speech, watery eyes, physical dysfunction. Cop shows up an hour after having done a few massive creamy bong hits. No smell, speech probably fine, and relates any perceived dysfunction to just tiredness or mental preoccupation. Then what?

How about Go bus and truck drivers? Are there
supervisors to screen them before they begin
their shift?

I am no expert but isn't that mental impairment
effects of weeds are not noticeable like alcohol?

They have roadside tests coming that will detrimine weed presence from up to 6 hrs after smoking a joint. So can easily be tested on an officer at the station if needed.

However do you know how many cops are popping opioids on the job with no testing. That would be my worry. Not the weed.

Maybe not as bad as the effects of booze but still noticeable . Only problem is now you are going wonder about that cop eating donuts when before it was just normal.

If I got drunk over the weekend I should be
sufficiently recovered by monday morning to
go to my job. If you got high every weekend
no one at your job would notice anything
unusual too for effects of weeds are not as
bad as booze outward. The difference is that
MJ can affect your brain cells for longer than
24 hours. I've read that it took 72 hours for
the effects to disappear.

How serious the consequences the effects
of weeds can be at work depends on what job it is.
I won't worry about my pot-smoking MPA giving
me a prostate massage. But I won't want the
surgeon operating on my prostate to have had
smoked weeds at all.
