Does anyone use a private VPN for downloading. If so would appreciate recommendations.

I searched for this topic but could not find anything. Apologies if I missed it.

I use IPVanish. Costs about $10 per month. Mostly use it for watching US content not available to Canadian ip addresses.

For some reason quite a few Canadian web sites, including terb, block me if my vpn is using a US based server.

IPVanish is the one I'm looking at right now. Any negatives?

I use ExpressVPN, primarily for streaming video from the UK and continental Europe. Once in a while for downloading too. I find it very simple to use and it is quite reliable. Cost is about $100 for the year.

The only issue I have is that it no longer runs on my Windows XP desktop. It's fine on my Windows Vista portable, but who knows for how long. Perhaps it's time for me to modernize?

Probably. Not a problem for me.

I just signed up and did a few speed tests with the VPN on and off. Looks like it shaves about 10% off my speed, which is better than I expected. I guess if I picked a server in Europe it'd be a different scenario.

Private Internet Access. Costs $40 USD per year or $7 monthly.

You can can select from bunch of servers around the world.

I used it to download torrent and watch US Netflix when I had a subscription. Now it use it to watch Kodi.

Much better than just an IP masking service.

How does the differ from IPVanish?

I too use PIA. $33.00/year. Never problems with it being slow. Easy to use.

I use PIA for my home, and NordVPN for my mobile phone. Nord on Android does a better job of reconnecting when moving between mobile network and wifi which is a big deal on a mobile device. PIA is faster otherwise.

I would use PIA everywhere if they fixed the wifi reconnect problem. It's a lot faster.

I use it for privacy rather than downloading.

I got burned once when downloading Game of Thrones off Torrent. Something happened and my torrent restarted in the middle of the night and my free proxy server did not restart. A few months later, I received an email with a letter from a lawyer representing HBO through my ISP saying they knew I had downloaded an episode and asked me to delete it and not share it online and there were some penalties involved if I continued. That's when I went out and got PIA. It was quite a wake up call for me and to make sure I shut down the torrent client when going to bed, no matter if I am behind a VPN or not.
