Problem connecting Laptop to TV

I connected my laptop to my TV via an HDMI cable (like I have done many times previously) and then used the TV remote to change the input to receive the HDMI signal from the computer as opposed to the TV signal. However, today I get this "NO SIGNAL" msg on my TV screen when I do that. I tried unplugging the cable and rebooting the computer and for a couple seconds the computer screen came up on the TV but it was in red instead of black and the image looked slightly distorted but then the image on the TV was lost and it said "NO SIGNAL". Any ideas on what could be the potential cause of the issue? And how to resolve it.

HDMI cable is probably damaged. The pins are very delicate, so forcing it even once, could render it useless. Common problem.

Probably the HDMI cable. You can pick a 3 foot one up at the dollar store for a couple of bucks that works just fine for testing.
