problems with Norton when doing a full scan

I tried doing 2 full scans but after somewhere at +100K of files it would seem to be stuck on a file (different file each time). I have Norton for over a year on this laptop without any problems before. After the first time I could not close Norton and had to go into Task Manager to do so. Also, I did a custom scan of the first file I had the problem with, scanned the folder it was in, and didn't find anything. I also just did a scan of just my Windows folder in the C drive (with almost 300K files) and it did not stop at any file (also didn't find anything). What could the problem be?

Thanks in advance

Uninstall that shit.

Go with AVG Free or MS Security Essentials.

Both are free and great AV.

Best to pass on MS Security Essentials.
MS Security Essentials was tested and didn't perform as well as expected. AVG or Avast ranked better and both are free also.

Norton AV by itself is very good but the whole Norton Security suite is a bloated resource hog. If Norton is hanging up and stalling it may be due to something nasty fighting with Norton trying to block Norton from doing its thing. If you know what or where the offending files are, you could try deleting them. I've done this in the past running XP and it worked with some malware I picked up. What OS do you have?

Install and run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, it's free.
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware may find something that Norton missed.

Once again we have timely and useful advice from Woodpeckr. I can only add that I ditched Norton a long time ago. AVG has been doing a great job for me ever since. Malwarebytes has proven to be quite useful as well.

Any knowledgeable computer guy has been removing Norton products from their computers for years. spend a couple of days and get a clean system. then make an image backup.

I'm using Windows 7. Both times when it stalled it was at different files.

Yup. Used to do that when I was a Windows user.

Again.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware may find something that Norton is failing to catch.

Then I would download either AVG or Avast, then remove Norton and then install either AVG or Avast then do a deep scan with the one you selected.

Which Norton product are you using? Internet Security? Anti-virus only?

Is Norton stalling on a sytem file or program/application file?

I've been using Norton IS for three years, most recently with Windows 7, and haven't experienced many problems at all. What has helped in the past is to un-install Norton completely using the Norton uninstall tool, and then do a fresh re-install (if you have the original install file).

It could also be a bad sector has formed on you hardrive and nav can't read it well. You may want to test your HD with seatools or whatever the brand of HD diagnostic software you need to download. Run the extended test.

I've used Norton AV in the past for 6 years with no problems. NAV is good and never paid for it. Used to use Norton 2002 over and over again for 6 years. Got NAV off AudioGalaxy, it was only a 20mb file. The boys at AudioGalaxy gave out the instructions on how to reuse it after a year expired so you could use it again for the next year. It worked great. Then I read about Avast in 2006 and switched over to Avast which I liked better because it ran leaner than NAV. Been on the net ~15 years and never paid for any AV. Now using Linux, there is no need for any AV because of its superior security.....

just to update on my situation. I was able to do a full scan the next day, and I did try several more times up to now without have any stalls. Fingers crossed it was just a temp problem and not a more serious one. I will look into AVG or Avast, however I still have over a year left on my Norton subscription. Thank you again everyone for your help.
