Hi friends,

I seem to be having having difficulties loading my computer. The message I recieve when I try to reboot is unable to locate "WIN.COM"

Would any of you fine men and women be able to help me out? I don't have my Windows 98 diisc, so that's not gonna solve the problem.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Download a copy of WIN.CNF and rename it to WIN.COM.

Copy the new WIN.COM file to a floppy disk.

Boot the down system by holding the 'CTRL' key to enter the boot menu.

Select the 'COMMAND PROMPT ONLY' option.

From the C:\> prompt:

Insert the floppy with the new WIN.COM file into the drive.
Type, COPY A:\WIN.COM C:\WINDOWS (note the 2 spaces) and press enter.
Remove the floppy and re-boot.

Thanks a lot, SL.

One last question. Would I be able to start in safe mode to d/l the file? I'm at my friends house using his comp right now.

Thanks again.

You will have to download it and save it to a floppy disc or a CDROM. Starting windows in safe mode probably won't give you access to your lan card and the internet......

Sorry for the late reply, but yeah what this guy said. Safe mode probably won't give you internet access.

Safe Mode in 98 doesn't load most hardware drivers including your network card and modem.

Hey guys,

First off, thanks for all your help.

I have now found my Windows '98 CD. SL, or any of you other computer savvy guys know how I should go about getting my computer back up and running?

I tried the command SL gave me, and all it said 1 file copied. When I re-booted, as soon as the Windows screen came up, my computer would instantly shut down (I copied the file COPY A:\WIN.COM C:\WINDOWS using 'c prompt command only').

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Reload windows dude. Start your computer with the windows CD in the drive and boot from that.

You may have to adjust your bios so that it boots from a: d: c: (figuring that d: is your cd/rom drive).

Now this may be a silly question but did you create a windows rescue disc like it asks you to when you first loaded windows? If you had you'd be good to go now....but I bet my right nut (I already bet my left one on another thread lol) you didn't .......:)
