PSP's stupid way of recognizing videos

So, I just bought a PSP today from the terb buy and sell forum, and I got a great deal ($200 for the system and 2gb card). Great transaction.

I download a few mpegs into the MUSIC folder, and they play great. I download a picture into the PHOTO folder, and it comes out perfect. Then I drag an mp4 (the only video type the PSP recognizes) into ... where else? The Video folder. Nothing! It doesn't recognize it. Immediately, I think the system is broken, and think I've been had. I try everything, even dragging the file to the MUSIC folder to see what happens. Nothing works.

Then, thanks to Google (I don't know what I'd do without this miracle tool), I find out that videos have to be stored in this way:

"The PSP reads video files using a directory structure that isn't put on the stick when you initially format it for PSP use. So you'll need to create a root directory called "mp_root" first, then place another directory named "100mnv01" under it. You put your MP4s inside that directory, but they must be named a certain way for the PSP to recognize them. The naming convention is m4vXXXXX.mp4, where "XXXXX" is a series of numbers, such as, say, 00001. "

Sigh. This wasn't even in the manual. Wasted about an hour of my time trying to find out what was wrong. Don't know why they had to make it so complicated and without even putting it in the manual.

I can convert any dvd movie for the psp to play using DVDFab Decrypter. So this will make my long bus trips to Buffalo a lot more fun. :D

Also, another thing about the PSP. Is connecting to the Internet free? I can't seem to get a connection. How do I subscribe to Internet service for the PSP?

Yes, the internet connection is based on whether you have a wireless connection at home or not or a nearby hotspot.

a friend of mine has a psp and was asking about modding and games for it .

anyone know anything about the modding ? I read that you needed to flash the FW to play the iso's , but then I got an email from a guy that's selling some games.

he said you just need to get a program called devhook and it allows you to play downloaded games.

anyone know where to get it ?

Thanks, Redbanner, I will. :)

I just got mine modded through a friend. ALL the games are now essentially free for me!! Absolutely amazing.

However, he told me to never try to mod it on your own, you have to know what you're doing. Otherwise, the thing will become a useless "brick".

I'm sure my friend can do it for you for a fee.

I don't know, but I'm sure for $60 bucks or so, he'd do it. Plus a small fee for me for my time, maybe $20. I can ask him if you'd like. I live close to Lansdowne/Bloor.

I already tolrd her it was probably going to be around $50 , so when I said 80
she said forget it.

I saw an article on how to do it. doesn't sound that hard . I might try it for her .
